Bigtime college football programs need a fanbase other than just their own students and alumni. The Univ of Tennessee for example only has about 21,000 undergraduate students, but UT's football stadium seats over 102,000 fans--not everyone sitting in those stadium seats or watching UT games on TV is a UT student or graduate. Widespread community fan support is necessary to build, and sustain a bigtime college football program.

Miami has a small local fan base, but a large national fan base. That comes with national championships.

I have an interesting point to add here though. My grandparents live on vacation about 75% of the year since my grandpa retired some years ago. I've gotten them a couple USF shirts and got my grandpa a USF hat which he wears often. Just from the times they've told me, USF has alot of international recognition. These people are NOT commenting on USF football. Internationally our school is looked at as very scholarly and many international students aspire to attend.

Jacksonville University is a private school in Jacksonville, Florida. Their mascot is the Dolphins.

Jackson State University is a public, historically black college located in Jackson, Mississippi. Their mascot is the Tigers.

Our fan base is on blast/on notice. That FSU / USF percentage at Ray Jay was not cool. I understand the apathy based on what we have seen over the last few years, but at least show up to the FSU game.
