The elusive signal caller has also been sacked 11 times. That's it right there. Hopefully with Schiano gone our offense can move the ball, but those stats are very telling. Rutgers D, as always, is going to be a tough mountain to climb.

We may not need to pass the ball at all.

I'm not saying your D isn't stout, but its safe to say that you guys haven't been tested (like many of the ladies in the "girls of..." thread). Well this is a scouting thread for Rutgers right? Such a thread wouldn't be complete without stats from the 1st 2 games... regardless of the competition... @USF will be our first major test in all 3 phases of the game... I don't deny that... Hope your D-line is not big fat and slow. We will kill you with our speed.

On offense, Tulane is 119 out of 120 teams in the country and Howard is ranked 100 out of 113. On defense Tulane is 104th and Howard is 72nd in FCS. They seem to have our number. Like that Holtz started scouting them this summer since they knew they would have a short week.

We will kill you with our speed. They are as fat and slow as they have always been under Schiano... Meaning that they aren't fat or slow... We took some hits on the 2 deep with some of our 2nd string DL getting injured whom will likely be out for a week or 2... So the 3rd string was rotated in to their spots... Defensive Line 5T-DE 1. 92 Jamil Merrell (rJr., 6-4, 255) 2. 07 Max Issaka (rFr., 6-3, 255) - playing for injured 5T-DE Jr Marcus Thompson 1T-NT 1. 72 Isaac Holmes (rJr., 6-3, 275) 2. 76 Marquise Wright (rFr., 6-3., 285) - playing for injured 1T-NT rFr Al Page 3T-DT 1. 94 Scott Vallone (rSr., 6-3, 275) 2. 91 Darius Hamilton (Fr., 6-4, 260) - 2012, 5 star DE recruit... REALLY disruptive, excellent technique RE 1. 13 Ka’Lial Glaud (Sr., 6-2, 230) 2. 49 Myles Jackson (rFr., 6-4, 235) - playing for injured RE rSr Marvin Booker Note: RE = Rush End... Sometimes we play with 2 DEs and sometimes we play with 2 REs, sometimes we play with 1 DE and 1 RE and sometimes we play with 2 DEs, 1 RE, 1 DT etc. Edited September 10, 2012 by blitz8ru

Rutgers D, as always, is going to be a tough mountain to climb. Our D this year is headed by our DC Robb Smith... Only 2 members from last year's staff are on this year's staff with the rest now coaching in the NFL for either the Buccs, Ravens or Rams... Those two are DC Robb Smith (former STs/LBs coach) and HC Kyle Flood (former assistant HC and OLs coach)... Smith along with Schiano engineered and implemented the 2011 Rutgers defense that went on to becoming the #14 total defense in the country... THis defense should finish the year in the top 10 this year with significant improvement along the DL and marginal improvement at LB and DB both of which were already excellent (Athlon ranked our LBs at #12 and DBs at #14 in the country this year)... So far the defense has lived up to its billing... It should get tested @USF and if Tyler Wilson is healthy, should be put to the ultimate test @Arkansas next week... BJ isn't going to really test our secondary with his arm... Tyler Wilson will (though he is rumored to be injured for our game next week)... Some background info on Smith Robb Smith begins his fourth season on the Rutgers sideline and first as defensive coordinator under head coach Kyle Flood. Smith previously coached special teams in 2011 and cornerbacks in 2010 after spending the 2009 season leading the outside linebackers. The Scarlet Knights have consistently excelled in special teams under the direction of Smith. In his first season, the Scarlet Knights enjoyed measured success with Smith as the special teams coordinator. After a 2008 season in which RU did not have a special teams touchdown, Rutgers collected four in 2009 on three kick returns and a punt return. The special teams unit also recorded six blocked kicks. Over the past two seasons, RU has recorded a total of 15 blocked kicks and seven punt/kickoff return touchdowns. The Scarlet Knights combined for just seven blocked kicks and one TD return in the two seasons prior to Smith arriving 'On the Banks'. Smith joined Rutgers after a seven-season stint on the Maine coaching staff, serving as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator during the end of his tenure with the Black Bears. In addition to his role as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, Smith also coached the team's linebackers. Under Smith, Maine was ranked in the top third nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision in total defense in each of his three seasons as defensive coordinator. Smith earned the promotion to assistant head coach after leading one of the finest defenses in the nation in 2006. In his first season as the defensive coordinator, the "Black Hole" defense ranked among the top five nationally in several categories, including: rush defense (first), total defense (second), sacks (third), scoring defense (fourth) and tackles for loss (fifth). Coaching Career 2012 – Rutgers (Defensive Coordinator/Secondary) 2011 – Rutgers (Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers) 2010 – Rutgers (Special Teams Coordinator/Cornerbacks) 2009 – Rutgers (Special Teams Coordinator/Outside linebackers) 2006-08 – Maine (Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator) 2005 – Maine (Special Teams/ Linebackers) 2002-04 – Maine (Defensive Backs) 1999-01 – Iowa (Quality Control/ Defensive Graduate Assistant) Playing Career Was a three-time letterman at Allegheny College at strong safety. I question the ability to stop the run up the middle without putting extra in the box. If that's the case, we could run over you or beat you over the top if you try to plan man outside and get burned. (Your secondary could contain us though...) I question the ability to stop the run up the middle without putting extra in the box. If that's the case, we could run over you or beat you over the top if you try to plan man outside and get burned. (Your secondary could contain us though...) Right... like you did all those other 7 times we've played since you joined the Big East (for the record we are 5-2 all time over you)... Our line is actually slightly bigger than it was last year... We've ALWAYS had a small line and that line has allowed for a top 20 defense most years... FYI our 2006 DL was smaller than this one and finished as the #2 total defense in the country including top 10 vs the rush... Our secondary will play man on your WRs... We have 3 starting CBs (rJr Logan Ryan, rSr Brandon Jones, rSr Marcus Cooper) and 1 starting FS (Sr Duron Harmon) whom all should be playing in the NFL in 2013 (Ryan as long as he declares early)... BJ also isn't very accurate and is a terrible passer... Your best bet is to rush on our defense... not pass... Though the rush D has gotten MUCH better over last year... There is a reason why BJ has always struggled against our defense... I expect that to continue when we meet up Thursday... IMO who wins this game will be predicated on how our passing game does especially if you guys stack the box vs our emerging run game... be prepared for a low scoring ugly game like last year... You aren't scoring more then 16 on this defense (unless you hit a ton of FGs)... Also I would advise AGAINST kicking it to Jeremy Deering... Not only did he have a KR for a TD last year vs you guys... he also had a KR for 55yds in the 2012 Tulane game (he got tackled by the last guy on their KO team, if he had stiff armed him he would have had another KR for a TD)... However if you kick it to the other guy be prepared to face the fastest 2011 U-17 sprinter in the world (Myles Shuler) with a 4.2 40 time... Your best bet would be to kick touchbacks...
