I'm not so sure the OL is up for the task of Rutgers DL/LB though. They'll be blitzing a lot and are a lot more talented than Nevada up front.

Hopefully BJ uses his hot reads successfully. Won't be so much time for 50 yd bombs.

Err...guys, our DL can crash in just fine. The game plan was to force Nevada's RB to beat us instead of their more dynamic QB. Thus, we ran contain with the DEs pretty often.

It won't be such a problem on Thursday. Giddins and Mims will be crashing in too, as well as any blitzers. Their OL should have its hands full.

If you say so. It looked like they were both beating us pretty good for a while.

Our run D has improved a LOT since last year... We held Tulane to 8yds rushing and Howard to 74yds rushing. Though Howard only had 30yds total offense at the half (-1yd rushing)... Most of their 149 total yds were made in the 2nd half against prevent D and 3rd string D....

We had 1 interception returned for a TD vs Tulane (2 other pick 6s were dropped in that game)... We also had 2 interceptions negated in the Howard game due to penalties... Though we have blocked 3 kicks so far including a blocked punt for a TD vs Howard, blocked extra point vs Howard and blocked extra point vs Tulane... We also have had 7 sacks for 40yds, 21 TFLs for 76yds and 1 Forced Fumble in those two games...

Is this guy really quoting stats against Tulane and Howard?

I'm not saying your D isn't stout, but its safe to say that you guys haven't been tested (like many of the ladies in the "girls of..." thread).

No disrespect, but I wouldnt really count on much from those first 2 games. It certainly gives you an idea of ho they will play, but their success is not indicative of the possible results of Thursday's game. Same goes for USF's matchup v. UTC.

Only thing we can count on for Thursday is that both teams will look stylish.

Our game plan on D will likely be to shut down the run, contain BJ in the pocket and make him beat our top 10 secondary with his arm...

Our game plan on O will likely be to run the ball down your throat with occasional passes to our WRs, TEs, FB and HBs... Expect lots of screens, WR laterals and deep throws to Brandon Coleman in the passing game... The last 2 games our WRs have done a poor job of holding onto the ball and running the correct routes and our QB has not been consistently accurate... Some timing issues are also there... All that should be closer to being fixed for the USF game (how much closer will only be determined at the game)... THe run game has been excellent so far... We have not had such a run game since Ray Rice left after 2007...

BTW our FB is ALSO a running and pass catching threat... don't sleep on him... Our backfield is now very similar to what we had in 2006 with HB Ray Rice and FB Brian Leonard -> HB Jawun Jamison and FB Michael Burton... Our 1b HB Savon Huggins and 2 HB Paul James are out with ankle injuries and likely won't be back for the USF game... So we'll have rFr Ben Martin and Fr Desmond Peoples to backup Jamison for the USF game...

Anyway we have the D and special teams to consistently flip the field position, get turnovers and force 3 and outs if our pass game continues to struggle converting 3rd downs... If our pass game starts to click watch out!!!

Well this is a scouting thread for Rutgers right?

Such a thread wouldn't be complete without stats from the 1st 2 games... regardless of the competition...

@USF will be our first major test in all 3 phases of the game... I don't deny that...

I'd be curious to see the QBs rushing numbers after the 1st qtr.

Even if we weren't successful in containing him, the DEs and LBs playing contain would account for the middle being more "open". Anyone with eyeballs could see the DEs hesitating most of the night.

Not saying Rutgers doesn't have the next Ray Rice / Brian Leonard combo, but against Tulane and Howard a lot of backs are going to look like that.

I have a bad feeling that we're going to have a few costly turnovers against Rutgers D, which keep them in the game. I'm not sold on the Rutgers offense and think our defense should corall them effectively.

If BJ puts up another clean slate, I think we can walk away beating the spread (-9.5). However, this game screams 2-3 turnovers.

During his three-plus years as a starter, USF quarterback B.J. Daniels has given opposing defensive coordinators fits with his diverse skill set. A true dual-threat, Daniels currently stands seventh all time in BIG EAST history in terms of total offense (8,617 yards).

Considering that resume, Daniels' numbers in three matchups with Rutgers are staggering: 31 completions in 68 attempts (45.6 percent), 438 yards, three touchdowns, four interceptions and a 1-2 record. The elusive signal caller has also been sacked 11 times.

Associated Press spacer1.gif

Daniels has thrown for six touchdowns and one INT this year

Linebacker Khaseem Greene, who has started in two of those contests and played a key role in the third, credits much of Rutgers' past success against Daniels to schematics, which he also feels is the key to Thursday's showdown with the Bulls.

"I think it's just the game plan that the coaches put out for us," Greene said. "It's such a good game plan that if we just go out and execute it the best we can, it's been proven to work. If we go out there and try to do our own things, that's where we'll get beat up on. So we've just got to stick to the plan, stick to what the coaches prepare for us and go out and execute it to the best of our ability."

Daniels is coming off a 363-yard, three touchdown performance in a come-from-behind win over Nevada. According to safety Duron Harmon, the 6-foot, 217-pounder's athleticism challenges the Scarlet Knights to be on the alert for the explosive plays at all times.

"He is definitely a unique guy," Harmon said. "I remember Coach Schiano used to say that is the closest college player he has ever seen to Mike Vick and you see the comparisons. I'm not calling him Mike Vick, though, because Mike Vick has done this for a lot of years but he has definitely has that Mike-Vick play the way he can scramble around, make you miss, the explosiveness, the way he can fire the ball so deep with just the flick of a wrist."

In the first two weeks of the 2012 season, the Rutgers defense has been its customary swarming self, albeit against inferior competition. In the eyes of cornerback Brandon Jones, that hustling, attacking style is part of what has confounded Daniels in the past.

"I just think we just try to play fast," Jones said. "Sometimes we make mistakes on defense but our speed, it cleans things up. He's a great player. He's going to make big plays but when we can get him on the ground, when we have the opportunity to get him on the ground we've got to get him down and that's what we're going to try to do."

Despite the success they have had stopping Daniels during his career, Harmon said Rutgers must be wary of letting their reputation get the better of them.

"If we ever go in there big-headed, he would dominate the football game and we know that," Harmon said. "We know we have our hands full. We have to go in there knowing that we need to stop him early and often. We can't let him get big plays, can't let him scramble around, we have to control everything that he wants to do."
