Among the names most often mentioned for the position are Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and South Florida head coach Skip Holtz.

What they always fail to clarify is that it's "most often mentioned" by knucklehead bloggers and Internet message board denizens ...

I agree. But I think the knuckleheads, like Brett McMurphy for example, want to lead in order to get those Internet message board denizens to praise them as "in the know".

Since Holtz and the UNC AD have been friends since teammates at Notre Dame, it's probably not that much of a reach. Probably a safe one to jump out front on.

Sad part is that it works .... the "denizens" only remember the **** that actually sticks to the wall.

How often does that really materialize ... an AD hiring an old teammate or childhood buddy?

Pretty sure hiring skip after this season at UNC would not be very well received by their fans.

Why would UNC want a losing coach?

Until Skip turns this team around he will not be attractive to any major / mid-major program... this should be the least of our worries.

Skip is 13-10 with USF. he is 85-60 overall as an HC. even if we lose out, he will still not be 1) a "losing coach" at USF or 2) a "losing coach" overall.

sometimes i wonder WTF you're talking about.

He has a losing record as our HC as far as Big East teams go... take out the cup cake wins and the stats are completely different.

take out the fourth quarters of Big East games and he's a winner

so every time some clown starts a rumor, anyone involved has to give credence to said clown by responding?

that's BS

ignore it-- it's idiotic

and if you honestly think ESPN doesn't have an axe to grind when it comes to the Big East, you are a ignorant and delusional

espn is a billion dollar money making machine

the laugh at how big east is run

once big east turned down espn's deal, espn moved on

is espn the new brett m? not everyone is out to get usf

The new word on from NC is that they are "locking onto" Chris Peterson of Boise.

Tar Heel Illustrated, in an ongoing effort to provide readers with the latest in North Carolina's search for a new head football coach, has discovered some new information on Monday.

Two different sources have confirmed to our staff Monday evening that Boise State head coach Chris Petersen and his family will be visiting Chapel Hill on or around Monday, December 5.

Boise State's last regular season game is at home against New Mexico on Saturday, December 3, and with the BSU team taking a break from practice at the end of the regular season for end-of-semester exams, it would be a uniquely ideal time for Petersen to visit UNC.

We initially learned of this development in a phone call from a source Monday afternoon, and then less than an hour later Eddy Landreth confirmed with one of his trusted sources---the same source who helped him break the news that Butch Davis was coming to UNC---with news that was virtually verbatim with what the earlier source had told us.

Despite several names being thrown around in recent days, our staff at THI has not wavered from the idea that Peterson has been AD Bubba Cunningham's No. 1 choice all along, and that he's zeroed in on the Boise State coach in an effort to land him for UNC.

Stay tuned for more on the UNC coaching search right here at Tar Heel Illustrated."

Sounds like they are going after a big winner.

I say we pull the switch and go after Butch Davis. The guy left a mess at UNC but has proven to also clean up messes at Florida schools. He cleaned the Dennis Erickson mess at UMiami and proved to be an amazing recruiter. Do you all remember how loaded that 2001 Miami team was with all his recruits?
