Like Holtz, not the reason for the loss, but I thought officiating was bad

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Coach Skip Holtz made it clear that the nine penalties called against USF weren't why the Bulls lost 16-10 Saturday at UConn, but he planned to write to the Big East questioning some of the calls.

"What's frustrating is I go back and I have a hard time finding five of them on film," Holtz said Sunday night. "It's very difficult to argue with an official crew when a game's going on. You go on to the next play. Not that it's going to make any difference. They throw the flag, the word is final."

Terry McAulay, an NFL official and the Big East's coordinator of football officiating, watched the game from the press box. Holtz said he will submit a letter to the league office, as well as video of the questionable calls.

"I would hope we would get a fair assessment when he sits down and watches the play in a neutral situation," Holtz said. "I can look at a lot of the penalties and go 'Okay … that's a good call.' I'm not trying to argue just any time a flag drops that everything they do is wrong."

The nine penalties were one short of the most under Holtz, and the 89 penalty yards were the most in his 19 games at USF.

The league should be better..I thought the job done was amateur.  I was going to comment during the game, but didn't want to sound like a whiner.  That one particular roughing the passer was a complete joke.

I hope he takes about 5 minutes to write the letter then spends every remaining working moment figuring out how to fix everything that is broken with this team.

The roughing the passer calls were definitely brutal and should not have been flagged.

The second call showed our defender clearly hit the QB's arm as he was throwing the ball.

Like it or not, Holtz is right.  Too many 'mistakes' by the officials in this game and it wasn't swinging evenly in my mind.  Like SKIP said though, we had our chances despite the officials, and couldn't call the right plays or "decisions" as he likes to call it.

Conspiracy theory...Big East officials want USF to lose the game because they are leaving the conference.  >:D

It sure seemed like the fix was in against us. Here at the DC watch party, we thought the calls were so bad we spent much of the second half making up bogus calls and yelling at the big screen. Some examples...

"Pass completion inbounds, 15 yards"

"Lack of fumble, 5 yards"

"Personal foul. Mismatched socks, 10 yards, loss of down"

etc, etc

I don't think anyone cares now.  Just a topic that got the attention of a Skip Holtz and something I think many of us saw.  And it wasn't just penalties, they were "spotted" a couple first downs too.  It wasn't the difference in the game.  I guess on a day when the allegation of incompetence was being tossed around it's only fair to include the zebras.
