Jacksonville Looking To Lure South Florida For Neutral-Site Game

NEWPORT, R.I. - Gator Bowl President Rick Catlett wants the University of South Florida to play a neutral-site game in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville and has had several discussions with USF athletic director Doug Woolard about the possibility.

"They're in our conference affiliated with the postseason bowl game, they're building a hell of a program and their fan base is excited," Catlett said. "It makes sense to us."

The Gator Bowl annually hosts the Florida-Georgia game and is looking to host another contest in September, Catlett said. The Gator Bowl would prefer USF to play a team from the SEC, ACC or Notre Dame. Florida State is playing Colorado in Jacksonville this year.

Catlett said 2014 was a possibility. Woolard said it could happen earlier if the right opponent was available and as long as USF has six home games for that season.

"It's our goal and effort to do it," Catlett said.

I was talking with a friend of mine and we both came to the conclusion that it might be UCiF... What other team would we need to play in a neutral site venue like Jacksonville?

what????  Why would that be a made for tv game?  what network other than brighthouse channel 47 would care about usf vs ucf??

Since we are all just speculating... 2 other scenarios could be...

1) A neutral site game against ND in 2012 (a return game from 2011)

2) Season opener against FSU moved to JAX in 2012... (which would suck, but makes for good TV in the Florida market)

Agreed .... That makes no sense if it is indeed a "TV game" .... Now, if it was a "central Florida cable TV game" I could see it.

The one that makes the most sense is against Notre Dame. 

They have committed to playing more Big East teams.

They are the natural TV draw, way more so than Clemson, GT, or even Alabama (which would be a nice "revenge" game for certain anti usf comments).

We play them up there and they would rather play us at a more neutral site than Tampa.

Notre Dame likes to play games in other than their normal areas.

The Gator Bowl has been trying to get them for the last how many years, only to see the Irish fall flat on the field.  This way they would have them. 

Notre Dame would be the odds on favorite in my mind.

I would say that you are probably the closest in the latest (what shall we specualte about) issue. I personally hope it's Clemson bcause while their fans may be rabid, they are football fans, and really pretty nice. The last time I saw ND live some dude tried to goad me into a fight by throwing his beer cup at me. The next thing I know is what seemed like 15 cops rushing that guy and escorting him out of the stadium. ND has way too many Yankee type fans.
