Officiating problems heading Big East's regular season

After trending upward for three years following its near-death experience, the league finally flatlined -- but only after West Virginia came within a few kicks of competing in the BCS Championship Game.

This isn't exactly a crisis. As Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said before the season, "We've gotten to where we want to be a lot faster than any of us [imagined]."

Tranghese will tell you he is pleased with the league's newfound balance, reflected by the fact that four teams (No. 9 West Virginia, No. 21 South Florida, No. 22 Cincinnati and No. 25 Connecticut) currently reside in the BCS standings.

But he also knows the Big East might finish the season without a top-10 representative in the AP poll after starting out with two (West Virginia and Louisville), plus No. 16 Rutgers. And as West Virginia proved two years ago with its Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia, a headline act helps a league's reputation much more than a bunch of pretty good teams.

which is a perfect explanation for the **** calls in the Rutgers game, and the gifts to WVU in the Pitt game.

the BEast wants marquee teams.  WVU and Rutgers were supposed to be it.  didnt quite work out that way.

an "illegal forward propulsion" call came between two 10-2 BEast teams and POSSIBLY two BCS bids.

f*** em.

Yeah. I mean, you know there is some rigging go'n down -- but at least try to be discreet about it.

I guess the pac-10 refs from last year were the big east Refs this year.

Simple. Pay for better officials, the Big East pays well below the going rate forother big conferences and you got some bad calls this year.

You get what you pay for.

I love how they not only reversed the "illegal forward propulsion", but they added a flag to it.

A flag on a replay?  What's next, rabies shots for the Easter Bunny?

the officials upstairs practice three times a week... that's a long way to throw a flag from the booth to the field :D

Good article, I was wondering if this was going to die or not because I think there is something really fishy about the BE officials.  It's hard not to get all conspiracy theorist when you see what happened at the Rutgers game and the PITT vs. WVU game.  Unfortunately, no one in the media cares about the USF at Rutgers game but at least everyone got to see the laughable attempt to change the outcome of the game at PITT/WVU.

If the league is "flatlining" like this article says then it is only because it brought it on itself.  The final standings in the league are completely wrong and they shot themselves in the foot with USF this year.
