"The quarterback situation is pretty wide open."So have senior-to-be Pat Julmiste and freshman Matt Grothe elevated their games to Hill's level, or has Hill fallen back to the pack?"That's a good question," Leavitt said. "I don't have an answer."Leavitt said he would prefer to name a starter before the end of spring "if he's good enough."Besides an unsettled quarterback position, the Bulls have suffered an extraordinary large number of injuries.Among those who have been hurt and won't participate the rest of the spring: WRs Jackie Chambers (knee) and Jessie Hester Jr. (shoulder), OTs Thed Watson (hand) and Jared Carnes (shoulder), RB Moise Plancher (hamstring), LB Chris Robinson (hand) and CB Tyller Roberts (ankle). Also, OG Jake Griffin suffered a broken finger Wednesday; SS Carlton Williams, who had been out all spring with a quad injury, returned Tuesday.Leavitt said several players are having good springs, including WRs Ian Randolph, Taurus Johnson and Marcus Edwards, CB Jerome Murphy, LBs Stephen Nicholas, Ben Moffitt and Pat St. Louis, DT Woody George, DEs Jarriett Buie and George Selvie, RB Walt Smith, SS Jeremy Burnett and FS Danny Verpaele."Our linebackers [Nicholas, Moffitt and St. Louis] are dominating - absolutely dominating," Leavitt said.George also has made a good showing after moving from end to tackle, Leavitt said. This is not good. We have not had a consistent and/or qualified quarterback since Marquel Blackwell graduated. If the current crop of quarterbacks cannot play the spread, then either change the offense to fit the skills of the best quarterback, or start recruiting quarterbacks who can play the spread.I personally hate the spread. It reminds me of the worthless no-huddle offense played by Jim Kelly's Buffalo Bills. Sure they made the Super Bowl 4 years in a row, but each time they lost to a superior defense and offense playing the good old pro-set. Each year the Super Bowl loss was more embarrassing for the Bills. Usually nobody remembers the Super Bowl loser, but when a team leaves a turd that bad on the field, it is hard to forget a stench that bad. I believe that Grothe is much better than Leavitt originally thought and he doesn't want to tip his hat too soon. Carlton was orignally named the starter and if Grothe wasn't up to the task he still would be the declared starter. I do not believe that Leavitt will go back to PJ as the starter. What I am saying is this...Grothe will be the starter.
