Memphis is starting to heat up.  They are the only one that scares me going into the conference tournament.  Hopefully someone else knocks them off in one of the earlier rounds.  They've had the talent, but now starting to play like a team.

I think they righted the ship more than started heating up. Yes, they beat Charlotte and FAU at home, but that was on the heels of a 10 point loss at North Texas and an embarrassing 27 point loss at SMU. They are 2-2 over their last 4 games. They obviously have the talent but they are not well coached and can wilt under the right pressure.  If Memphis ends up winning their last 3, especially the game at FAU, then I will be more concerned about them.

A couple of things that folks don’t understand, you can manipulate the NET. … And there’s a strength of schedule dynamic where the Big 12 has managed it with their scheduling. Their nonconference scheduling, they’re playing 300 level teams and winning by 40 and 50 points to increase their offensive and defensive efficiency numbers, which is a big part of the NET tool,” Brad Brownell said Monday on WCCP. “So that’s why you see teams trying to win at the end of games by 30 or 40 points instead of putting in your walk-ons.

“So the Big 12, they’re playing eight nonconference games, seven nonconference games against low level teams and increasing their NET. Then when they all get into the league, their totals are higher, their NET rankings are higher. And so their teams are perceived to be a little better than they are.

The Athletic basically had the same article about the Big XII and their NET manipulation. Very interesting read.

We wouldn't be ranked where we are in the NET if we had beaten up on our soft OOC schedule. I agree, it is a bad ranking system and I truly believe the Big 12 is going to get exposed in the NCAAT (with the exception of Houston), but USF's ranking is where it is because of 2 or 3 bad losses early in the season. We need the committee to help us overcome it and, hopefully, articles like the athletic and the Clemson coach railing against the system will help.

So when the NCAA says "the NET will no longer use winning percentage, adjusted winning percentage and SCORING MARGIN", it's not giving the whole picture ...

What is the TLDR on Big 12 NET manipulation?

They have the nerve to schedule Quad 4 non conference games and not lose them at home.

I don't know it just sounds as someone who is coaching a 19-8 , 9-7  ACC team, who is looking like they might not make it to the NCAAT, making excuses. Teams that are not included in the final 68 usually have themselves to blame and it comes down to a loss here or there.

I think it's more about running up the score early in the season. Not necessarily "we beat them by 30", but more so "we scored 100+ points in 40 minutes of basketball 6/8 times OOC". You win a few games early big, your NET jumps (especially when other teams may be playing big OOC scheduled games early in the season). When the entire conference does it, everyone has a high NET to start conference play. Then, you're almost exclusively playing Q1/Q2 games throughout conference play and going 8-8 in conference is rewarded because all 16 of those wins/losses are Q1/Q2.

Houston (1) - 10 Q1, 6 Q2 games

Arizona (4) (lost to FAU early in the season) - 10 Q1, 6 Q2

Iowa St. (8) - 9 Q1, 7 Q2

Baylor (13) - 13 Q1, 6 Q2

USF (84) - 0 Q1, 8 Q2

Because the rest of our schedule (outside of FAU/SMU at a neutral site in conference tourney) is against low NET teams, we're at a large disadvantage if we are trying to build our resume this late in the season.

The remaining factors include the Team Value Index (TVI), which is a result-based feature that rewards teams for beating quality opponents, particularly away from home, as well as an adjusted net efficiency rating. The adjusted efficiency is a team’s net efficiency, adjusted for strength of opponent and location (home/away/neutral) across all games played. For example, a given efficiency value (net points per 100 possessions) against stronger opposition rates higher than the same efficiency against lesser opponents and having a certain efficiency on the road rates higher than the same efficiency at home.

I think the only appropriate response is to ban all Big 12 teams from the NCAAT for 4 years.
