Let's hire Southern Miss's defensive line coach as head coach. He pinky promises to be here a really really long time.

Good coaches will always move up the ladder to bigger / better schools and conferences.  Being in a better conference makes you a little safer from this because the talent pool and money is fairly equal for all members.  Until we finish the new stadium and somehow get into a better conference, we're destined to this rinse and repeat cycle of either firing bad coaches every few years or having good coaches leave every few years.  The only way to hold on to the talent when a good coach leaves is raising NIL money to pay them to stay.

This thought process reminds me of companies that could not survive as workers increased their mobility and stopped staying at one job for their entire careers. It’s about changing from thinking “we need to come up with ways to stop coaches from leaving” to “we need to invest into the program so they don’t want to leave”.

Our problem isnt retaining coaches...I.wish that was our problem...our problem is hiring just good coaches.

Cincy has lost a bunch of coaches over the decades but they are replaced with winners and they keep going on.  We are the exact opposite of Cincy unfortunately.  And when they do hire bad they don't ever hire twice in a row.

One of the best advantages USF has is location. Tampa Bay keeps getting better.

Exactly, that's the point.

We're going to be in the same space as DOZENS of other schools.  How do we differentiate so that players want to be here?  As @bullstampede9922 says above, "NIL" but when our NIL efforts/ability are microscopic, what's next?  We have to out-compete other schools.  It ain't just about the coach anymore.  This is where I see resource-starved schools struggling.  The whole reason for bringing this up is hopefully we get a great coach that hopefully brings in great players.  In today's environment they can have one great season and the program is left to rebuild the next year or two plus.  We do pitch "Tampa Bay" as a great place, but we need to do more.

Wins and consistently competing for that 6th playoff spot…

Honestly, this is the key right now. Let's get a good coach, lose him and then start trying to figure out what needs to be done to keep them here. Your mention of Cincy is a grim reminder. You would have thought, although they have been a stepping stone in the past, you'd figure Fickell was set there for a good while with their elevation.
