My initial thought was that it was a mile high club thing, but no:

To put it simply, a positioning flight is a flight purchased for the sole purpose of getting you to another airport to start another trip, whether it be to lessen the cost of a trip or to just get you where your airline of choice will be flying from.

If you have a better opportunity to go somewhere but from a different location than your original airport and your intended destination you take a flight to that place to take the flight you see as better or a better value. In this instance I am going to Detroit because it has a better hard product for my flight to Amsterdam

Last I flew international (1999), it was free alcohol. You might be drunk by the time you take off for Amsterdam.
