Houston would have to go undefeated and us beat them, and we would have to be FSU's only loss. We'd also need other teams in our conference schedule to be ranked.

I think Boise St has already provided the blueprint on how to be a spolier. When you are in a non power 5 conference you have to have back to back perfect seasons to earn the right to play on the big boy level.  Has Nevada not beat Boise St that year it was likely they were going to play for the National Championship.

We would have to destroy FSU and everyone else on our schedule and FSU and UH would have to be world beaters as well.

We will go to the college playoff if the following happens (unlikely, but it could)

1.  There is only one or two undefeated P5 teams

1.  We go undefeated

2. Houston goes undefeated and loses to us in the AAC championship game

3. Oklahoma wins the Big 12

4.  FSU wins the ACC

5.  A couple of AAC teams other than USF and Houston are ranked or doing well.

 

I don't think in that scenario we, or Houston should they beat us in the AAC championship game, would be left out.  The AAC CG would be in essence part of the playoff.

If we go undefeated and Houston has the season expected, we should have beaten two top 10 teams. If any P5 schools have two losses we'd have to be ahead of them and one loss teams would be toss ups. If we don't get in we sue.

If we go undefeated Tampa will be rallying behind us. I would expect outrage at the National Championship game if other teams are playing in our home stadium and we didn't get the chance.

Aresco should announce that for 2017 The American Champion and Mountain West Champion will stage a championship game the second week in December, the highest rank team between the two champs will host the game to be televised by CBS.   This would be the best way to show the Big 5 ESPN conferences that we can be proactive too.
