a 10 team conference guarantees a rematch for a Conference Championship Game.

The rematch always favors the loser. They have to gameplan different.

This would be worse for them.

It gives their best team a tough opponent at the end of the season... that is all they need. Bama, Ohio st, oregon, all could have lost their championship game, then the big 12 would have been in, and everyone would say it was because they didn't have to face a tough opponent.

So...Big 12 officials were reportedly meeting in NYC yesterday...and this morning there's this tweet:

@MarkHarlanUSF: Wow...gotta get out of NYC this morning after conference meetings & great visits and get back to Tampa..Nor'easter here making that hard!

Discuss.

This guy is very shrewd. It feels good to know that our sports programs finally have a competent leader!

There is some big football gathering there. Lots of networking going on.

Happens every year...

Florida is a natural market for BIG 12 expansion.  Florida is still a growing state like Texas and is third state in US population-wise with 20 million residents.  Conferences expanding need to look out to future like 20+ years and exponentially growing alumni bases at USF and UCF make a lot of sense for BIG 12.

Am I the only one who reads these tweets as meaning nothing and the Big 12 could still expand soon?

Their still rolling in huge piles of money, and would be rolling in less if they added teams.
Plus if the Big12's request to allow a 10 team conference to have a playoff game is approved, no need for expansion.

From espn

NCAA bylaws require teams to have a minimum of six teams in each division to stage a championship game. It is believed to be a non-controversial change to rescind that rule if the Big 12 wanted to stage such a game with 10 teams.

didn't they already ask this before?

The thing is, they can take their time.  The Big 12 knows we're not going anywhere anytime soon.

We need them more then they need us. Only a few P5 conferences, but plenty of teams wanting to get it in one.

There are still more reasons why the big 12 would not expand rather than add teams. I think its been made pretty clear by now they do not want to grow with what's out there. If and when we move it will be because the B12 poached other P5 or gets poached.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
