Schneider got CRUSHED a couple times because our backup LS. Special teams looked worse than most JV high school teams.

I was surprised that the hit after the first botched snap was not a penalty for roughing, since Schneider punted the ball and the defender did not get a piece of it

We got flagged for a play like that at UConn maybe in ‘11 or ‘13 - in that play, the punter started to run, then kicked at the last second

I believe once the ball hits the ground the punter can be a live target

Thx - That would explain why there was no flag

Seems like an odd rule, given the amount of protection kickers typically have

Schneider got leveled on that hit

The reason the rule is that way is the defender does not have to hesitate. If he does the punter could take off and run or throw it. Even hesitating would then allow the punter to get a successful punt off. You can’t expect a defender running full speed to have to hesitate to allow the punter time to make up for a mistake his own team made.
Once the ball hits the ground it’s a free for all. Kind of like a tipped pass on coverage.
I thought it was funny though a ND analyst said the punter, on the third bad snap, should have stood a step or two back when it was obvious the snapper was horrible.

I couldn't watch the punts after the first 2, so I didn't see any of it.

The impact of a play depends on perspective.  Last week I laughed at Citadel's punt follies.  This week I cringed at ours.

Luckily, I had the good sense not to watch the game and only saw this on lowlights.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
