Why isn't a WP/PB considered an error?

P/C have their own designations of WP/PB because of how many times they handle the ball in a game.  They are essentially the same as an error with same basic requirements of allowing a runner to advance or reach (dropped 3rd strike) base.

An error is a fielding skill, wild pitches are a pitching skill, passed balls are a catching skill. The reason for counting any of them is for evaluation. If you want to know if your catcher can actually catch, looking at his errors doesn't help you. Likewise, John Lester the pitcher is very different than John Lester the fielder.

Odd fact, though. If you're the catcher and the runner barrels you over and you drop the ball, it's an error.

You'd think, though, like an error, if a run scored because of one it wouldn't be classified as "earned". Just doesn't seem right .... or am I wrong about how the whole earned/unearned run thing works?

Are they on WP's, then? A couple of box scores for that game that I saw had us giving up an earned run ....
