Spoiler alert! Here's how the second half of the season will play out

9:15 AM ET
  •
    Alex Scarborough ESPN Staff Writer

8. Two Group of 5 teams -- USF and San Diego State -- will finish undefeated and out in the cold

A Power 5 coach once told me there's no such thing as parity in college football. He was right. The world belongs to the blue-blood programs and the rest of the FBS is just playing pitch and catch.

We're going to get not just one, but two undefeated teams this season and neither is going to make the playoff over several one-loss Power 5 teams.

It won't come as a huge surprise, but South Florida and San Diego State will reinforce the status of Group of 5 teams in the CFP era. They simply won't have the résumé needed to make a difference in playoff deliberations. Just look at their current FPI ratings where they check in in the 40s.

It's a shame, too, because USF's Quinton Flowers and San Diego State's Penny are bona fide stars.

The entire system is rigged to benefit 10 to 15 schools.

And unfortunately the Presidents/AD's of all of the other schools (especially the "G5") are too busy kissing those school's and ESPN"s butts to do anything about it.

Much as I'd love to see our Bulls make the playoffs, I wouldn't agree that a 1-loss Alabama (for instance) should give way to USF. Now a 1-loss Washington...maybe more interesting decision.

They don't care because they still get massive amounts of TV money even if the program is garbage.

It's really been that way for Decades. It is just now there is literally zero chance that someone could sneak in and win it. Who is the last outsider team to win the National Championship? BYU in 1984?

We technically had access when we were in the Big East and there was more interest.

All they have to do is expand by one more round of games, expand to 8. 5 autobids from the power 5 and 3 at Large with one guaranteed to the Non-Power 5 schools.

In that scenario, USF would play like Alabama in the 1st round and probably get crushed but it were make the excitement greater for everybody.

This article is an example for low attendance. The simple fact that many teams never have a chance to get to the Playoffs regardless of how well they perform creates fan apathy. The problem is that the TV execs haven't realized that these lost fans do not just begin to follow or watch what games/teams are available, they simply stop watching. That's why there is a drop off in ticket sales and viewership nationally as apposed to just a few conferences.

It's just to bad that the TV Executives and the School Presidents and AD's aren't smart enough to figure it out. They should look at the NFL. The NFL expanded their playoffs for a reason.

Excellent point. If USF should fall another division I will watch but with the same intensity and I would certainly stop watching the other CFB games.

TV would love to expand the playoffs.  The school presidents and ADs don't want to because the bowls shower them with exotic trips and fun stuff.  An expanded playoff would weaken or kill off the bowl gravy train.
