Holtz ran the power and Taggart tried the first few years...didn't work out for either coach.

I don't think anyone is advocating a pure power game like CWT ran initially.  It's still a spread, just with more inside runs than outside.

Huge difference between what Taggart tried to do, and what Gilbert is bringing. It simply means more pulling guards and down hill scheme. Still out of the gun and with built in RPO's.

Dj a much better north south back than stretching horizontally.  Could be coaches want to run a more physical practice in spring to see what linemen are gonna be starters.  See who on defense is gonna adhere to gap control and who isnt.  we couldnt stop even the worst running team from exposing us last year.

It's day 3 though, I wouldn't put the "final" stamp on anything just yet. Plenty of time to adjust to the emerging strengths, and the power run is a great way to see what you have on the lines.

For the record, the GCO had some power run formations too. They didn't entirely run East-West. The running game was and will be the strength of this offense.

I always wonder about these things.  Was this because DJ was that tough or was it because the LB was that soft?

Didn't see the clip, but I suspect it's because - as reported by TDS - the offense was allowed to hit the defense, but the defense was forbidden to hit back. Caused some tempers to flare, apparently.

Both reports are concerning. Seems like a fundamentally different approach to offense and like our defense may not simply have the talent to improve as dramatically as we'd like.
