TV execs at mainly ESPN control P5 status, the american is on espn more than the acc and others because our contract makes our exposure a priority, in return we accept below market price for this entertainment.  This is meant to build the brand for us, and for espn, they get to monopolize good college football and create any narrative they wish.  Down the road, the American either builds it's brand as a great conference and gets P5 status or the whole thing falls apart because other schools won't schedule our teams enough for any team in the American to break the top 10 (a travesty IMO).

American has been getting a lot of pub this week with the 3 ranked teams. We got their attention, hopefully we can finish with a strong Bowl showing against some of the P5..

We might have a couple of teams ranked in the pre-season top 25.

Is there any chance that Memphis makes the playoff this year or is their SOS too weak?

Temple will need to keep climbing, and then Memphis will have to beat Temple in the Championship, ending their season with an exclamation point then yes I could see them getting in the playoffs, there really aren't any elite teams this year.

A lot of things would have to happen.  Temple would have to run the table except for Memphis.  One big problem is Memphis plays both Temple and Houston in the regular season which would lessen the impact of the AAC championship game being that it would likely be a re-match.

This seems to be taking shape already.

Was some talk on SXM CFB today about it.  Even if Notre Dame was ranked #1 in the country and Temple beat them next week AND won the AAC championship game AND finished the season 12-0, the consensus was they would be left out unless the P5 teams had 2+ losses each.

That makes sense. For a G5 team to make the playoffs, that would leave 2 P5 conference champions out in the cold. Possible I guess, but highly improbable ....

I'm not sure the OTHER conferences have to agree... in reality, it's about national perception... so ESPN has to say the American is a Power conference.

Then the NCAA has to add the American to the "autonomy" governance... and while the other conferences have some say there, it's all of Division I that decides that.

It does no good for anyone to say we are a Power conference if we don't get a cut of the pie of big dollars.  That only happens if the P5 conferences let us into the playoff.

yup.  A 1 loss Ohio State, LSU, Utah, Clemson, etc goes to playoff before undefeated Temple who beats the #1 ranked team in the country.  If the P5 teams being considered for the 4 playoff spots had 2 losses however, an undefeated Temple might get picked.

ESPin will tell us who they want to see in the playoffs, who they want in the bowl games, ect....  They have ruined the game we all love.   Years ago before the BE as we know it folded , Andrea Adelson (A.A) from ESPN was doing one of her weekly BE Chats (She was the blogger at the time). Someone asked her about the rivalries being lost due to expansion (Pitt and WVU,) Her reply was " WE(ESPN) WILLTELL YOU WHO YOUR RIVALS WILL BE"   kid you not.   We laughed it off at the time as A.A being sarcastic.  But look how truthful it is today.

ESPN has sucked for years..  They pander to the big markets and they can't get off Tom Brady's jock.  I still love college game day, but that's about it.  They have ruined college football.  I wonder if Pitt likes going from contenders every year in the Big East to being doormats in the ACC.
