HIs reads on the read option have not been great, IMO.  He has handed to Mack a bunch where I thought he had space around the end.  You could really only tell by watching every play and see if the end crashed down or not or if you were observing the end coming down after the hand off.

An observation I have about Flowers' passing game is he looks like he has been instructed to throw only if a receiver is completely and absolutely wide open.  It almost looks like he has never thrown to recievers with a defender within 10 yards of a receiver before.  Almost every pass that he has completed so far has either been a bubble screen or the receiver had no defenders anywhere near him. Just about every miss has not even been close.  the exceptions have been the long throw down the sideline to Barr that was almost picked off and the throw to the right sideline that was a bit too high and receiver caught it barely out of bounds.  Almost seems that he is more afraid of getting picked off than actually trying to complete a pass.  Maybe that is coming from the coaching staff.

As far as positives, he has some escapability to him.  I have not been impressed yet with his overall running ability.  Looks fast enough, but hasn't shown he can take over a game the way we have seen from other running QBs (either our own or opponents)   If we were running a true read option spread it would maybe make more of a difference and a chance to showcase his running ability, but doesn't really look like we are running read option that often.

i think the coaches can do more for him to allow him to make some higher percentage passes by rolling him out and give him a run-throw option.

I haven't really had the chance to pay attention, but how has he been doing with his reads and decisions on the read option plays?  Before his dump off pass to Johnson for the TD, He blew the correct read and handed off into the pile at the goal line.  He could have walked into the endzone if he kept it as the hwole defense crashe don that play.  He knew it too.

I agree that he has shied away from some throws that many QBs can make. I am also curious whether that is his own hesitation or an instruction from the coaching staff. In any event, he has a long way to go on the passing side so I would rather be a little conservative until he improves. The willingness to NOT throw a pass that is a likely pick may be one advantage he has over SB.

I saw same the blown read on the option, but the fact that he realized he blew it is promising in itself for me. That's a very correctable problem.

I think you will see more roll-outs as the season goes on - I think FSU had too much speed to make that viable. They are by far the best team we will play all year.

I like that his #1 priority seems to be to protect the ball.

I agree on the roll out pass-run option.

QF has taken care of the ball both on the run and pass. I expected 3-4 turnovers against FSU.

Yep. Bench can throw a ball sure. Nothing against him and I am glad he is the guy right behind flowers. I agree fully that flowers controlled the ball better than we thought he would going against one of the top teams in the country. I think everyone is forgetting that we have had 2 absurdly skewed examples of competition levels and neither of which will USF be facing for the rest of the season. From here on out I think it would be reasonable for USF to get 3-4 TD's a game. I doubt we will blow up the stats like Famu and I doubt our Defense will be run through like FSU was able to do with us being down 3 starters for the 2nd half.

I will only become worried if we self destruct against MD. If QF gives us a good lead in the 1st half we may see bench again and get a better gauge of where he is really at. I really really like where this team is going.

WHERE ARE THE PASSES OVER THE MIDDLE?

Short, medium, some, please.

Can't throw them? Bubbles and long sideline passes will continue to equal losses, no matter the scrambles or Mack!

I'd definitely like to see us running a couple option sweeps on slower teams, don't think it would have worked well vs FSU but more Navy-like options might just get a nice gap for Mack.

Wrong thread man. You have to jump over to the "Start Bench" thread for this type of material ;)

Either way people over there have already equated completions numbers made during glorified running plays to the types of throws you are looking for.

One thing I found interesting was that even though FSU knew we couldn't throw any of that we were still able to pick up some first downs (not on 3rd down though doah!) and I think its directly related to QF running ability. I think with the offense we saw against FSU we can hopefully win at least 5 games. Mostly bc of the D. If QF can develop as a passer or SB proves to be a pass threat I would assume we go bowling. Either way I think the talent on the team has improved and we are getting closer...
