You know as well as I do that sports outlets can't agree on a top-25 let alone a ranking of all of the FBS teams. What I would look at, is are we ranked in the correct general area? For example, if we divy up the nations teams into quartile, where do we belong? First-Quartile: Top-25 teams or knocking on the door. Mostly P5 with an odd G5 here or there. Second-Quartile: Middle of the road P5 teams; upper-level G5 teams. Near lock for bowl eligibility. Third-Quartile: Lower-level P5 teams; Middle of the road G5 teams. Bowl contention. Fourth-Quartile: Lower-level G5 teams; not likely for bowl eligibility. Will probably have a losing record. Look at where we are. We've lost 35 of our last 50 games. Last year was an even less impressive than it sounds 4-8 record. One of the worst offensive performances in college football. This year, we still have question marks on both sides of the ball, new offensive/defensive schemes and coaches, and are on the verge of losing another head coach and falling into several more years of turmoil. We were placed in the fourth-quartile, that's where we are right now. Actually a bit surprised that there are 17 teams ranked below us at this point.

I'm surprised we are as high as we are.

The most optimistic evaluation I can muster: Let's say our offense is much improved #80 (-1.3) instead of #116 (-7.2) Let's say our defense is much improved #50 (2.6) instead of #74 (-0.7) That would put or total "score" at 1.6 which would rank us at #59 overall. Though, there's no way we're 40 spots better on offense and 25 spots better on defense. Maybe we get one or the other. Maybe we get a little bit of both. But when being #59 out of 128 is a wild exaggeration, things are not going well.
