USF Leads American Athletic Conference In Final

2014-15 Learfield Director’s Cup Standings

Bulls post highest point total and finish in 15 years; lead a conference in overall sport performance standings for first time ever.

TAMPA, JUNE 25, 2015 – On the heels of eight programs reaching NCAA postseason competition culminating in an outstanding spring, USF Athletics finished atop the American Athletic Conference in the final 2014-15 Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings.

The Director’s Cup, which honors institutions maintaining broad-based athletic programs and achieving success in many sports, awards points for success in 10 men’s sports and 10 women’s sports at the NCAA Division I level. USF posted a total of 257.75 points for the 2014-15 season and ranked No. 73 among 347 Division I programs. The point total and overall finish marked USF’s best in 15 years and the second-highest ever in program history.

The Bulls, in their first season under Director of Athletics Mark Harlan, finished the highest among the 11 schools in the American Athletic Conference, making 2014-15 the first year in which USF has led a conference in the Learfield Director’s Cup standings. USF edged out UConn (No. 74, 255 points) to lead The American and also ranked ahead of schools such as Wake Forest, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Washington State.

“I am so proud of what our student-athletes, coaches and support staff accomplished this season,” Harlan said. “You can feel the momentum building in USF Athletics and everyone involved believes there is no limit to the great things we can achieve. Frankly, we feel like we left a few points out there, but this is a strong start to where we want to take USF Athletics and the great achievements on the road ahead.”

The 2014-15 Director’s Cup overall ranking and point total were USF’s highest since placing 59th with 314.5 points after the 2000-01 season, a transition year for USF into the NCAA FBS independent.

The Bulls had eight programs reach NCAA postseason competition during the 2014-15 season, including four in the spring led by program-best runs by men’s golf and men’s tennis and baseball’s first NCAA tournament appearance in 13 years.

The Men’s golf team posted a program record finishing ranked No. 8 in the nation after making an unprecedented run into the final eight at the NCAA Tournament, while men’s tennis did the same finishing ranked No. 16 in the nation after making a first-ever run to the NCAA finals.

The women’s soccer team received just the second NCAA Tournament bid in program history after reaching the conference championship game while women’s basketball received its highest ever NCAA Tournament seed at No. 6 and host first and second round games for the first time. Jose Fernandez’s squad would end the season with the program’s first-ever AP Top 25 ranking.

Meanwhile, men’s and women’s track and field were both represented in the NCAA Indoor Championships, were triple-jumper Matthew O’Neal earned All-America honors finishing sixth, and Outdoor Championships, where O’Neal and pole-vaulter David Shepherd advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

I'd love an AAC championship trophy in football.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22

"They picked us at the bottom. We're trying to get to the top. We're looking forward to the future, not backward.''
