Doc Posted February 1, 2015 Group: Member Topic Count: 20 Content Count: 1,027 Reputation: 27 Days Won: 2 Joined: 03/13/2005 Share Posted February 1, 2015 Thanks! Made it home and just finished watching the women's game on ESPN3 (withheld knowing the outcome and watched as if live). I had a choice to go to either game today. WBB at Memphis was a bit closer (and more likely to be a victory) but I had never before been to Tulsa for a sporting event and ended up seeing a pretty good game. Glad I went despite the loss. I didn't hear the broadcast but did get a chance to talk with the radio crew a bit before the game.

You would love it as Tulsa has that nice stadium which adds to the gameday experience. One day, USF may get that football stadium on campus and hope it mirrors Tulsa. Poor play design prior to the foul and then not having a timeout to draw something up afterwards was unfortunate. And that's why all we got was a fadeaway three pointer with 2.7 to play. The play to call would have bee to drive someone into the lane and hope for either a bucket or a foul. We're pretty bad from distance, no reason to take the last shot from outside. But really, simply being in the game at the end with a chance to win is pretty good for this year. Go back and check the stats from today's game. It obviously wasn't the highest pctg play called but it was in the hands of the right player .... and it did go in and out. True, but it was a pretty low-percentage shot. I doubt if it was the one COA wanted either.FWIW, post game he said it was the one they drew up ...

But really, simply being in the game at the end with a chance to win is pretty good for this year. In fairness to the shooter, Corey Allen Jr., he does shoot 3 Pointers at 38.8%, 33-85 on the season, and at that point he was on pace for a career scoring game which he ended up getting. He was very hot in everything he shot that whole game and he shoots the 3 for the highest percentage on the team. Would a drive to the basket POSSIBLY have a better outcome? Definitely possible but doesn't mean he wouldn't miss the closer shot or get blocked either. He shoots 2 point shots at 46.7% (7.9% is not a WHOLE lot higher for a 1 shot opportunity). I do not fault the hot player (who happens to be the best long range shooter on the team) taking the shot, wherever it may be from, to win the game. I doubt if it was the one COA wanted either. FWIW, post game he said it was the one they drew up ... In that case, I'm a better close-out coach Than Antigua. The probability of a basket or a foul in the lane is much higher than for an off-balance outside shot when we've sucked all year from the perimeter. You know the other coach knows you're going for the lane and will have told his players, "Block, but at all costs avoid the foul." As 12 points out CAJ is 39% from three and 47% from two, probably even higher than that from the lane. Subtract stress from the three, and add in the % for a foul, and it's well over 50-50, probably 70-30 instead of 30-70. I'd rather have a 70% shot than a 30%'er anytime.
