Free space is always good, especially when it helps draw in the best med students.

Agreed. This is the kind of thing that leads to USF just shutting down the school.

Great for the students, since they'll be closer to their teaching hospital on Davis Islands.

It's great for USF.  It gives us a huge presence downtown, it allows USF health to expand other programs, such as nursing.  This is a huge development for USF.  smazza is just doing his usual USF bashing.

Could there be another JD Alexander situation where the medical school is taken away? Possibly gifted to a "flagship" institution like UF or FSU? Or... gasp... Florida Polytech!

No.  This facility falls directly under the USF - Tampa umbrella.

Unlike Lakeland which was a separate satellite "branch" of the USF System

And it looks like the BOG has approved USF's request to move the Morsani College of Medicine downtown. Assuming Scott doesn't veto this item from the upcoming budget, USF should be in good shape from the legislative side of things:

Something everyone is missing here; USF's teaching hoapital is TGH... To keep the medical school away from TGH is foolish..,. FH Tampa just does not have the resources required for Level 1 status...

USF's medical school makes the most sense to move closer to CAMLS and TGH....
