Attended a breakfast Friday for my company being in the USF "Fast 56".  The speaker gave some stats to where USF is today with freshman applications.

    30,000 applied

    11,000 accepted

Average gpa: 3.97 (kids take 5.0 advanced class in high school these days....so it looks like you better be in these to get that GPA)

    Average SAT:  1190

Pretty **** impressive increase over the past 10 years.

I went to the dinner, they shared a lot of solid stats on USF businesses. We are in good shape as an organization

Dr. Genshaft has done tons to raise the academic standards of USF and our national reputation.  Not sure I could get in today.

    Go Bulls!

I wouldn't have been able to sleepwalk in like I did in 2003 (it's hard to tell given the 5.0 classes that didn't exist while I was in HS), but if they go up any further I wouldn't make the cut.

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer here, but the national average for the SAT is now 1500 (out of a possible 2400) on the new scale. Are you sure those numbers are right?

I think the writing portion is optional now, isn't it?  Meaning that for some number of students, it's not out of 2400?  It's been a long while since I've dealt with that stuff though.

Oh, wow.  I keep forgetting the SAT is not 1600 any longer.  However, I think I've also read that some schools don't use the writing section, which would keep the 1190 looking pretty good.

Makes me proud to be involved in education. Writing is now "optional" when showing a college what kind of skills you have. Or it the academic equivalent of a QB not throwing at the NFL combine?

    Correct

Most SAT scores show Reading and Mathematics, Writing is optional that may be considered during admission.

However when you see University profiles, such as catalogs or websites that include an average SAT score, it normally includes only the read and write sections.

Saw this chart floating around and figured it went with the discussion. For the more visually inclined.
