No one has ever been able to explain to me why Suitcase City means anything to USF. Is the argument that straying off campus puts you in a bad neighborhood? Suitcase City is Bearss to Fowler, I-275 to the back of a ton of commerce running down Bruce B. Downs. They're no where near each other for a college student. Even if you walked west off of campus, you're running into Chili's, Panera Bread, the VA Hospital, a Wells Fargo. What student is walking/driving 3 miles, running into a ****** neighborhood, and saying its detrimental to the growth of USF?

 

This article should answer why this area is important to USF among others.

I understand the area is important, but the problems in that article don't stem from it being the crappy neighborhood "suitcase city" that's always brought up.

It would be pretty cool if they made something along the lines of a "brewery district" where they put in bars alongside Yeungling and Buttwiser plants in addition to getting some of the small local breweries to open up store fronts/bars. I think something like that would have a good amount of appeal to students.

If an OCS stadium is built at the Univ. Mall location, as is often speculated, I think it would behoove USF to help partake in any type of zoning policy that will help gentrify the area for the safety of students who may want to walk to such speculated OCS. Currently, however, I think you're right suit case city is just a blighted area close to USF, and really doesn't impact USF directly other than just making the surrounding area around USF appear "worse" than it probably is.

The County Commissioners are generally receptive to USF and Genshaft, so I'm not sure how much more of an investment is needed. There were a lot of redevelopment plans that were nixed around 2004-2005, when the market bubble burst. Time will tell.
