The lesser competition is such a garbage argument. In our first game as a true I-A against a ranked Pitt program, Blackwell was at his best (and our program was definitely short on five star athletes). Blackwell said BJ had the most potential of any QB that ever played at USF (this was a conversation we had after BJ's frosh season). He said BJ's legacy would be determined by how he led the program. Marquel still considered himself better than Grothe, but indicated BJ had the most raw talent of all three of them (and that is not a dig at Grothe). Marquel is currently the only QB EVER at USF to get a shot with a NFL team. He looked real good in his game with the Jets, unfortunately the Jets released him and kept the other QB they drafted (who ended up sucking).

Pitt was not ranked in 2001 when USF beat them. USF's first win over a team ranked in either poll was the Dec. 2002 win over Bowling Green, which was No. 25 in the coaches poll but unranked in the AP poll. The first win over a team ranked in the AP poll was the 45-14 thumping of No. 9 Louisville in 2005.

Pitt was 1-1 as was USF...

Blackwell was 37/65 for 343 yards and 4 TDs.

Rubin had 11 catches for 144 yards and 2 TDs.

It ended the Pitt career of Walt Harris.

Blackwell was the QB in the Bowling Green game, which was coached by Urban Meyer.

Taggart had a reason for not adding him to his USF coaching staff after he took the job. Willie's had 14 years college football coaching experience. I believe he knows what he is doing.

.

Yeah, it was called recruiting.

So did Taggart not hire anyone until he had Marquel onboard?

That press release was from after the game. Pitt wasn't ranked (my mistake), but they were undefeated coming into that game after drubbing ETSU the week before 35-0. We beat them in their first game at Heinz Field behind the Marquel to Rubin show.

I guess you can jump on him MVIUSA, but the exposure Blackwell delivered to USF in the victory over Pitt was a moment the alum will cherish forever. That moment would have lasted longer had 9/11 not occurred two days later.

If we're going to discuss Marquel as a coach, let's talk about his 7-on-7 team that he led to a championship this summer. That team was stacked with talent that is bound for places other than USF because Skip didn't go after those kids. Talent USF can't afford not to recruit. The players gravitate to Marquel and he will be a huge asset in keeping talented local kids in Tampa. It was a great hire after losing Scott to UM.

lets not talk about padless 7-on-7

Like his timely hiring of a DC? Obviously he took his time on staff while jumping on recruiting.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
