I would think we would be at least as desirable as UCF especially considering our larger stadium.

With the Leavitt settlement and still having to pay Holtz a portion of his salary, I think Joe's right, scheduling ODU seems to be a matter of economics. We just don't have the cash.

Then schedule home and home with some BCS teams that will at least increase the home attendance.  I know it's not as easy said as does, but this is just strait up embarrassing.  As our conference deteriorates around us we need to schedule stronger OOC opponents to compensate and we get ODU...  SO in essence we'll play a road game at a 1AA school.  It's more than absurd.  There's no TV money in it.  It's just bad at every angle.

Ok, we're not going to get Alabama or Nebraska in a home and home, but for the love of god why not get FAU or FIU.  Pick a school that might actually help the home attendance...

that's the logic that fails them. if we signed a 1 for 1 with south carolina not only would it not cost a penny but we would sell tons more tickets and might get tv money. we are losing out on a ton of money by scheduling ODU instead of a decent BCS opponent.

Surprised this wasn't up here already

Looks like we are signing a one and one with Old Dominion. Sorry don't have the link- it's on Greg's blog.

Head scratcher there. Our neighbors to the northeast get Texas, South Carolina, Ohio State, Ect on their schedule and we get....Old Dominion.

the ridiculous scheduling continues

old doninion in football? absurd

this is why usf is stuck in the mud with dumb decisions like this

our leaders think small time

it is embarassing

This sucks, we all know it. You can try to find excuses but it still sucks. If it walks talks and acts like a duck, its a duck. Terrible

Unless we've got a lot of big things brewing, which of course is possible, this is not good at all. If we are in a big conference, no big deal, but if not, every possible game should be against a team in one of the power conferences.

We had a home and home with Ball State.  Why is everyone so shocked about this potential deal?  You can't play Michigan every week.

No.  But once every few seasons would be nice.

The sky is not falling by any means.  But adding a home and home series against ODU is not that exciting to me.

UCF has yet to "kill a giant", and USC, Penn St, and others still see UCF as a weakling C-USA school who can't beat the big boys (and they're probably writing off the UGA bowl upset as a fluke and that UGA didn't get up for that game, and the fact UGA was only 6-6 anyways).

2012 and 2013 are UCF's litmus test. So far they have failed at home against Missouri (and that was winnable) and on the road at Ohio State. This year they get a road test with Penn State and Missouri, and a home test against USC. If they manage to win some of those games, they might cause other schools to think twice, but as of now, UCF is a good team on it's own level but still can't get over the hump.

USF isn't the team of yesteryear, but our history shows that we're dangerous and get up against the big boys. We didn't get it done against FSU or Miami this year, but the overall season was a tanker, and even in our abysmal 2011 year, we still managed to squeak by Notre Dame and that's enough to keep some of the bigger schools from risking us on the schedule.

Think of it like this: schedule with USF and risk them getting over on you, or go with UCF, who is now on a "level" field with USF (people see a win over a Big East school and it still looks better than C-USA or FCS, SunBelt, etc), and who hasn't had the history of upsets.

The Mizzou game last year was very disappointing and was very winnable.  Ohio State was 12-0 last year, so that loss wasn't too bad.  UCF getting these schedules was mostly due to good timing.  Penn State lost an OOC game vs. Virginia next year, because Virginia had to make room for another school.  We were set to have a home game with KSU, last year, but they bailed on that game the last minute and we were lucky that Mizzou had open dates, due to their new SEC schedule.  We had also lost a home and home scheduled with UConn for 2013 and 2015, because of the new Big East schedule starting in 2013, so everything just fell into place, regarding South Carolina.  UCF did seek PSU after hearing about the Virginia game falling through to replace BCC.  UCF wanted to strengthen their schedule going forward, as well.  The PSU deal eliminates BCC in 2013 and Jacksonville State in 2014, so we won't have any more 1-AA games on our schedule going forward, if possible.  However, after all of this expansion is done...who knows what our future schedules will even look like.

For PSU...you also have to factor in that they don't get to go to any bowl games for a while.  So scheduling games in destination/vacation type cities would be pretty attractive for them and their fans, although it's not so much for the team, itself.  Plus, they just had to pay $50 million if fees due to the NCAA hammer on them, so this doing more 1-1 deals, would make sense...and why not get one in Florida, where a lot of their alumni live, anyhow.

For now, this is UCF's OOC Scheduling Breakdown the next few years:

2013

AKRON

@ FIU

@ Penn State (not official)

SOUTH CAROLINA

2014

FIU

PENN STATE

@ Missouri

BYU

2015

@ South Carolina

2016

@ Maryland

2017

@ Texas

Maryland

Question...do you think other schools are fearing we are rebounding and might be hesitant to play us?

We have a good rep for beating OOC teams

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
