we were 7-5 last year. we started 0-2 in conference with a loss to syracuse at home.

we were 3-3 at this point. the only difference was we lost our big OOC game while this year we won it.

we went to a bowl and beat clemson.

not sure why anyone thought we would go undefeated.

I thought 1 or 2 game improvement . 8-4 or 9-3. still think we can do it.

it's the people that kept telling themselves that we were going 10-2 or 11-1 with a trip to miami that are now despondent.

your lofty expectations come crashing down every year.

Ours and the coaching staff's expectations of this season were very clear in August.  Win the Big East.  Well, 1st semester report card has us failing miserably. Got annihilated by a middle of the pack BE team and lost to the worst team in the BE who couldn't even score a TD on offense.

Time to realize this team is in DEAD LAST place in the conference and will under perform yet another season.  Hopefully in 2014 when we are in the Sunbelt conference we can get to that magical 10 win season.

pitt was picked 2nd or 1st by most unbiased experts. we were picked 3rd by most. UConn is defending conference champs. they lost their fist 2 last year. yeah I thought we would win but i thought we would beat syracuse at home last year too.

a coaching staff will always tell you their goal is to win their conference. ask spurrier. that's his goal at south carolina. hell he just wants to win his half of the conference. something they have never done.

we were 7-5 last year.

Who cares about preseason rankings, they obviously don't matter.  Facts are Pitt got destroyed by a crapppy Utah team and statistically UCant was the 3rd from last defense in all of FBS.

I think at the beginning of every season, the expectation of winning the Big East has not been so "lofty" to me.  The conference is not that good.  The other C-USA retreads have already won it (Cincy, Louisville).  UConn won it last year--at 8-4/5-2...and then each year we're supposed to have improved from the last.  This year was going to be BJ's 2nd year in the same offensive scheme, we had a bunch of receivers (unlike last year), and a great running game.  Most of the other teams have new coaches and whatnot.

So winning the BE with a trip to Miami is a tough goal, but not a lofty expectation.  Going undefeated, lofty.  Going 10-2, yeah, lofty.  Winning the BE - tough, but not lofty.

We get the same results in the BE that we did when we had PJ and we were the skunks of the BCS in 2005.  No change.

I really believed we were better than Pitt and UConn.  Especially UConn.  But we're not.  Scoreboard.

My expectations now are refined to "Be competitive in the BE" or whatever conference we end up being part of.

USF tends to play "up" to teams that are favored to win and play "down" to the teams we are supposed to beat.  Although it's hard to see this team win much of anything more with the way they have been playing, I have hope that they will look at Cincy, Miami, and WV as though they were ND caliber and play up to them... Pulling us into a 6-6 or 7-5 record with a friggin St Pete Bowl bid...

Where did the coaching staff ever say they expected to win the Big East?

Why set "goals" if you don't "expect" to reach them, Mr Semantics?

LOL ... So EVERY year, every college football program EXPECTS to win their conference? Don't be an idiot ... There's a difference and you know it.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
