Keep "USF" but change the name to the "University of the State of Florida"

Been thinking about this one for a while.

We're not in the south part of the state and the name doesn't reflect the reality (anymore). There are now 4 major/state schools south of us, so it's time to change the name.

Also, changing the word "South" to "State" indicates we're no longer a minor "directional school" - we're now stepping up to the top tier of Floridian schools. We don't just recruit students locally, we recruit them across the whole state (same for athletes).

I'm all for tradition, but modernization is good too. Let's modernize the name for the 21st century!

i always thought of the word "south" in our name to be traditional since it has a story behind why it's in our name.  that's even more exaggerated now that it doesn't really apply anymore.

I'd have to sleep on the university of the state of Florida before I can really comment on it.

Neah we were here first... also FAMU would need to change their name long before we need too... they don't really teach Agriculture or Mechanics anymore...

What are you going to do with all those degrees that have "University of South Florida" on them? Would they reprint them with the change or do people just have one for some university that doesn't exist anymore?

Not sure but schools have changed names in the past:

Memphis State University -> University of Memphis

University of South Carolina Spartanburg -> University of South Carolina Upstate

North Texas State University -> University of North Texas

and of course:

Florida Technological University -> University of Central Florida
