Five-star visits USF

By Chris Nee, Recruiting Analyst

Sep 11, 4:07 pm EDT

A week after winning at Notre Dame, the University of South Florida returned home and hosted Ball State. The Bulls defeated their opponent easily, 37-7 on Saturday, in front of an energized crowd still buzzing from the week before. One prospect in attendance may have generated his own buzz, as five-star athlete Nelson Agholor from Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep made his way to Raymond James Stadium for a visit and to enjoy the game.

“I thought it was just a great opportunity to go see a college football game and they aren’t very far away,†Agholor said. “It is a privilege to get tickets like that and it is just nice to be able to take advantage of it.â€

“I thought the game was pretty good,†Agholor added. “Obviously they were coming off of a pretty big win over ND. I think their student body was very excited about them coming home.â€

For the Rivals100 prospect, the visit was more about enjoying a game than to learn more about the hometown program, but he knew that with the tickets came the attention of Skip Holtz’ staff.

“I guess the recruiting process came with it,†Agholor said with a laugh.

According to Agholor, South Florida has been in the picture throughout the process and done a good job of making him alert to the fact they want him to remain home for his collegiate career.

“They have been great recruiting me,†Agholor said. “As a person, they know how I stand when it comes to this recruiting process and they have built a good bond. They just really want me to take my time and do it all right.â€

He has dealt with a majority of the coaching staff at the Big East program.

“Coach (Rick) Smith is my recruiting coordinator but Phil McGeoghan is also recruiting me, the whole staff are real good people,†Agholor said. “I’ve gotten to know them very well.â€

Next weekend there is a great schedule of games in the Sunshine State as Florida hosts Tennessee, Florida International hosts Central Florida, Florida State hosts Oklahoma, and Miami hosts Ohio State. Despite a smorgasbord of options, Agholor is unsure at this time whether or not he will attend any games next weekend.

“I don’t know right now,†Agholor said. “It will come down to how Friday night goes. It will depend on how we do. We have a big game and I am hoping we do well, so maybe I can worry about celebrating afterwards and visiting a college program. First we have to get a win on Friday night.â€

Berkeley Prep (2-0) faces Naples (Fla.) Golden Gate on Friday evening. At this point in the recruiting process, Agholor said his focus is really on Friday nights instead of the recruiting process and finding his future home.

“It hasn’t really even crossed my mind lately because we have a job to do over here and that is to win games,†Agholor said. “I am just worried about my high school season right now.â€

As of this time, Agholor has yet to schedule any official visits. He said those visits may not come until the end of the season or after that point.

He sounds like a great bright young man. Where ever he decides to go I hope he has an outstanding career and does big things on and off the field. Nice hearing the positives he is saying about our staff and program. Good luck this year Nelson!

I agree with deters... he carries himself very well and he sounds like he has the work ethic to be successful in and out of football.  It's great to see a local player succeed, wherever he ends up!

I don't even dare to hope on this one. I think he likes us a lot but the lure of being able to go wherever you want in the country as opposed to staying home may be too great. If he stayed local, he could be a legend though and there's always Mom's home cooking.......

In my opinion this is the meat of the article.  He came to come to a big time college game.  Hang out on the sidelines and check out Ray Jay and the college atmosphere.

It's great that he's giving us a look, but he's not coming here.

He probably won't end up here, but I don't think it has anything to do with that comment.

The thing we have going for us this year, unlike past years, is that at least he got to play in some big time national events with three or four of our verbals as teammates. He called Sean Price the best TE in the country and was very impressed with some of our other guys. Having a few guys like that already in this class makes it a lot easier for someone like him to get on board.

He knew it was a recruiting event the entire time so I don't see what all the fuss is about. How else do you think he got sideline passes? He sure doesn't work for the press or NCAA holding markers and chains.

If he didn't want to be in the limelight by recruiters for the game he wouldn't have gone.
