Why was BJ able to move the ball under Leavitt's system...

I can't believe some of you continually blame the receivers.  BJ makes horrible decisions, throws into triple coverage and you blame the receiver.

+1

Blame a receiver for being wide open and not getting thrown the ball?

Blame a receiver for running a post route with a defender toward the inside of the field and then the ball is thrown short to the inside?

Blame a receiver who gets thrown a ball at least one step behind him?

When do you clowns start blaming the person actually making the poor decisions and poor passes?

While BJ has been largely ineffective and making poor decisions, but he's not the sole reason the offense is struggling.

It is the entire unit as a whole.

1.  Starting with the O-Line.  They have been effective at run blocking, but their pass protection and blitz pick up has been atrocious.  Running backs included.  BJ is lucky to get 3 steps before he is worrying about the pass rush.

2.  Our WRs are largely very slow (Lamar aside).  We have no burner stretching the field.  Bogan is the only guy running deep routes.  I haven't seem Lamar try and stretch the field one time.  Not that BJ would get time in the pocket to make the through anyways.  Landi is a good possession receiver, but only when working against linebackers.  Corners are smothering him and he's getting no separation.  Lamar is only really taking screens which have been moderately successful.  Bravo-Brown is also getting blanketed.  There's no margin for error the receivers are giving the QB.

3.  BJ can't read the defense and can't make accurate throws.  He often picks the wrong receiver to throw to.  Then when he does pick the correct receiver he makes terrible passes.  I'm sure his confidence is shattered.  He's got 0 time in the pocket to read the defense.  Because of this when he does get time he has become very hesitant and gives DBs time to make up ground staring down targets.

The only bright spots on offense we've seen are Bogan and the running game.  I feel we're getting away from the running game too quickly.  If we run the ball 40 times and throw 20 screens I think that's an effective offensive game-plan this year.  The problem comes when teams start to stack the box and switch to press coverage.  It's a defense vulnerable to the big pass, but when teams switch to it we are completely shut down.  We need to continue to try to power through the 8 or 9 man fronts with the run game and play for field position.  Because that's better than trying to throw it down-field this year.

Your right about Leavitt having an offensive system. It was give the QB the ball and tell them to win the game. The system where the QB was the first and second option.

Yeah that was a great system.  And then in those games where the teams were fast enough to contain him, we would implode.

FSU had one of the worst defenses in football last year

That was a problem where the OC was either incapable or unwilling to make proper adjustments.  That comes back to playcalling and game management.  Some of the same problems and mistakes we have seen from this staff already.

There are more problems right now than just BJ.

Oh I'm sorry, I thought we were talking about BJ in that system (based on title of thread).  I was not really considering the Grothe era.

Wasn't the FSU game a couple big pass plays and then the defense hold on for dear life?  We haven't had that deep threat this year.

You said "fast enough", not "good enough" ... I guarantee those Florida boys on the FSU D are fast.
