Report: Tusker cut ex-USF QB Grothe

Former USF quarterback Matt Grothe has been cut by the UFL's Florida Tuskers, the Orlando Sentinel reported Monday night.

Grothe, whose senior year was cut short last fall by a knee injury, had returned to full health and signed with the Tuskers, who open their season in 12 days. The Tuskers have the UFL's returning MVP in quarterback Brook Bollinger, and Grothe was competing with Arena Football veteran Chris Greisen for a backup spot.

"Matt came in and did some good things and showed continued improvement throughout camp," coach Jay Gruden told the Sentinel. "Unfortunately, with a 52-man roster, we are limited to two quarterback spots. ... In the end I just felt better going with the more experienced player. Matt's a young guy and hopefully he will get other opportunities to continue his playing career at the professional level."

Grothe is the second USF alum cut by the Tuskers this week, following defensive end Jarriett Buie. Receiver Huey Whittaker and safety J.R. Reed remain on the Orlando team's roster.

Bummer. He'll surface on an arena team. Good to see him hitting Hootie Saturday night.

That sucks, I think he should start and try to coach. He said that is what he would like to do, and right now it likes his playing days are going no where.

I still think he should try the CFL. I think he could become a star up there.

I wondered how they finally found someone who cold throw worth a ****-- he nailed Hootie several times, the last right on the snozz

not that surprising now that I recall his girl works for Hooters

do they have a practice squad type of arrangement? two qbs seems awful thin at a position that gets hurt often
