College football Media day moments

UCF Coach George O'Leary still won't speak to Orlando Sentinel

Iliana Limon

Sentinel Staff Writer

July 21, 2008

UCF Coach George O'Leary declined to answer questions from the Orlando Sentinel and barred his players from granting interviews with the newspaper during Conference USA media day on Sunday.

He also refused to speak with other reporters if a representative from the Sentinel was present at the UCF table during the only session for print reporters at media day.

O'Leary said last week he would not speak with the Sentinel until the newspaper corrected errors in its coverage of Ereck Plancher's death.

The newspaper has asked UCF officials to outline the mistakes, but the school has declined to discuss the errors in detail.

Conference USA officials and Ryan Powell, the media relations representative for the UCF football team, attempted to mediate the situation and allow a reporter to sit at the UCF table without asking questions, but O'Leary would not change his stance.

"We are sensitive to the needs of the Orlando Sentinel to cover the University of Central Florida, and we're also sensitive to the passion Coach O'Leary brings to his job," Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky said. "It's our hope that this issue can be resolved so that Central Florida fans can enjoy coverage of their team throughout the football season."

GOLFat and UCiF Administration screw their fans.

Well that explains why UCiF cannot sell out the erector set and has to try to screw USF fans into purchasing their season ticket. Sad really sad.

The OS should drop coverage. Just report on the Big 4 and dont even report UCF scores.

There's got to be more to this somewhere ..... They cannot possibly be this ignorant ... and please save the UCF jokes. There has to be more to this that's already come out and we haven't seen or is still behind the scenes. NOBODY is stupid enough to say "we're not talking to you until you correct mistakes that you're not aware of and we're not pointing them out".... NOBODY.

I honestly feel for that guy ...

That tells us that this isn't a UCF vendetta, it's an O'Leary vendetta.  At this point, O'Leary is running the school instead of the other way around.

The school can't make a guy talk to the media other than what's outlined in his contract.  He's not boycotting all media, just one outlet.  He's not running the school.

Now someone needs to make a picture of mickey mouse crying and begging O-Liar for quote.

I don't remember where I saw it, but numerous sources have mentioned that GOL met with the OS sports staff before any article was posted.  They asked questions and got answers but not one thing asked or said was used in any article.  That, along with the anonymous quotes, set off O'Leary.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
