FIU set to break ground on new stadium in MarchBY PETE PELEGRIN

The time has come to stick a shovel in the ground for Florida International's new football stadium.

After The Florida Board of Governors approved a resolution Thursday that will allow FIU to finance the expansion of its football stadium, the Golden Panthers are ready to break ground on their new on-campus facility come March.

FIU now will be able to issue bonds to finance the estimated $31 million first phase of the project, which includes the conversion of current FIU Stadium from a 7,500 permanent-seat facility to one with more than 18,000 seats and eventually to 45,000 seats.

The stadium will include amenities such as air-conditioned luxury suites, a wrap-around concourse with a full field view, 14 luxury suites, 1,400 club seats, a video scoreboard and a stadium club.

''This feels great and we're all very excited,'' FIU athletic director Pete Garcia said. ``This stadium is integral to the future of this university, not just for the growth, but the quality as well.''

The first phase of the project will be completed by the opening of the 2008 football season, when the Golden Panthers host their first game in their new stadium against South Florida.

The second phase of the project includes a 100,000-square-foot student center which will house undergraduate advising, admissions, financial aid and a welcome center.

That phase of the project, at a cost of about $24 million, is expected to be completed in 2011.

I wasnt questioning our present stadium situation. I was pointing out that we will get to see two new stadiums and by the way notice the costs between FIU's proposed one and UCF's.

They must have big plans for the future if they think they're going to be able to draw 45,000 people there.

If they win people will show.  Tampa and Miami are both banwagon cities.

I think it has to go beyond just winning. Beating Sun Belt teams is not going to get people to go to there and watch.

Where are they going to go?

Southern Miss wins a good deal and they have been in the same place for a long time. I'm sure we can find other programs that are in that same mold.

USF knew where they wanted to go for a long time and we built the program the right way to get us to the position where we are right now.

USF got very lucky that Miami bolted for the ACC. If nbot for that move than we would still be in CUSA. FIU is building their program using the USF mold.

I vote for FIU to go to the Big Ten.  Then we can have an out of conference in state BCS rival.  It makes no logical sense but the other schools in the Big Ten would love to take trips down to Miami every year.    ;D ;D ;D ;D
