They started playing in '79. Interesting that a girl I knew in high school, upon graduation from Sun Valley High School in Monroe, NC ('78) went off to some place called the University of Central Florida. Mostly everyone else, who did opt for higher education, found themselves either at UNCC (pronounced Charlotte) or App State. A twenty odd year head start does make a difference, and I can see where upstart USF passing them could grind their gears. There were times when I wondered why UCF wasn't farther up the ladder to begin with.

You don’t have to answer. I don’t have to know. I just remember the University in the Orlando area was FlaTech. Must have been when I was in high school. UCF athletics is somewhat conservative with spending and tries not to over leverage for big debt projects. That's why we went with a rust bucket when we were just a young CUSA team with a tiny budget. We could have gambled that maybe we'd make the big time eventually and that the money would be there to cover something expensive, but it could have backfired. The debt service from our stadium is easily covered by the what our GameDay revenue brings in. Our exit fees are a drop in the bucket because of how the payment timeline the AAC agreed to stretches out. I believe the base $10M is over 3 or 4 years and the $8M extra for leaving early is over like 10 years or more after that. Also the lazy river hasn't caused us any debt because we're only using donations for it. This tourism tax money we applied for is because we *don't* go into heavy debt and want to continue to operate that way.
