Stars, while not everything, are not meaningless.

They are to a coach who isn't aware of them ....

Stars are fun and all but if you look back at two of our best players recently Battie and Weaver both were 2 stars that play like 4-5 stars.

So a good coach that has an eye for talent despite the stars rating and knows how to coach them up is what really is important.

Look at Miami they always seem to have top 25 classes and are a pretty avg ACC team.

He didn't play the last two games.  That's a quitter in my book (unless he was injured or he broke some team rule).

You have no idea what may or may not have happened, yet you have made a decision.  But you caveat the decision.

Interesting.

I like how he is working through today.  Shows to me he is serious and it is not about just saying the right thing.

Jordan Phillips (Tennessee transfer) and Desmond Mamudi (Virginia Tech transfer) - if they are as advertised out of high school - immediately fix our depth issue at DT. Will be interesting to see if they end up Bulls.

So, if they were as advertised, would they be in the Transfer Portal?

Yeah, that wasn't the premise.  It was more that he was not being guided by stars as a worthy measure of talent.

Coach Go seemed to decide for himself, not a rating service.  Star services can be used by some to generally categorize players based on highlight tapes, yes.

Exactly this.  A recruiting service has one person looking at highlight reels of hundreds of players and combining that with the offers they have supposedly recieved to determine a star rating.  It says nothing about a fit a player might have in a certain system, nothing about the drive, commitment.  USF had many people sifting through tape and then doing deeper dives on a smaller subset of players.  Recruiting is far more nuanced than a general star rating based on a 20 minute review of highlights.

Exactly.  Many of these guys just simply aren't that good.  Period.  Yet everyone wants to bring them in.  You've heard of the 2 star player who plays like a 4 star right.  Everyone wants those guys.  But guess what, there are 4 star players that play like 2 star players and zero star players.  What makes you think these guys are any better than the guys on our roster?  Coach Golesh knows how to evaluate talent better than you do.  He just does.  If he didn't offer them, they weren't good enough to make an impact.

Good point, but there are plenty of guys who transfer who are top-level guys. See: Valdes-Scantling, Marquez; Mitchell, Kawika; Mangham, Jared; Horn, Jimmy; Dukes, Mikey - you get the point. Obviously, Mamudi was over-recruited to wind up at Rhode Island. Phillips may end up being a dude. He signed with Maryland and still has 4 years of eligibility.

Not saying any of us know better than Coach Go. We don’t. But, by your logic, if all the guys in the portal suck, why bother looking at any of them?

You must also need to account, the type of players Tennessee attracts vs USF. Just because a kid can’t break into starting role at UT doesn’t mean he can’t at USF. We had one of the worse defensive line in college football.
