The article suggests otherwise.

"Football" and "Winning Football" are two different things. The Saban Effect only applies to a handful of universities. Plus, Alabama wasn't exactly known for its academics, so they had a lot of room to improve in enrollment, before Saban got there.

You got it! You have people that grow up UF, FSU, UM, OSU fans and they want to go there because of that; but, there are ALOT of kids that look at academics, location, programs, experience opportunities and a host of other items that factor in. When it comes to USF, we are located in Tampa (good night life, beach/bay life, business/internship opportunities), nice campus (contained and not spread out throughout a city), great academics and a sports scene for sports nuts (pro and college, during our good years, haha) to satisfy everyone. Looking at Gainesville (middle of nowhere), crappy Orlando and Tallahassee, USF is just a crazy good University!! Taking sports out of it, for me personally (I am a little biased), USF is a perfect school in so many ways.

One of the things that Central always had going for it was a lack of professional football in the area. They are Orlando's only option. USF has to split fandom with the Bucs. A lot of people don't care to follow multiple teams. IMO, if Orlando had an NFL team, Central Florida wouldn't have leap frogged us.

Or if Tampa didn't have an NFL team we'd already have an OCS. :drummer:

Also have to factor in all the other major sports in this area when being compared to them. Only so much discretionary spending for sports by fans and corporations ...

Possibly ... but I wouldn't be so sure of that.  We could have played down at UT's stadium (before it was renovated)... or they would have delayed starting the team.

Very true, that’s why Alabama, Auburn and LSU (Baton Rouge) are so big, they have no pro sports teams at all.

This is why USF is impressive.

USF Hoops doesn’t compete with any local NBA team so that should be good once they start winning. Tampa Bay loves football so both Bucs & Bulls should do well with attendance. If the Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech can sit in the ACC then USF can too…
