If I had to guess, it's because it's not a mirror and you can actually see the logo and helmet.  It's also not a fad like chrome, which dates it to exactly the last couple of years.

Unless it was the 2008 St. Petersburg / Magic Jack bowl in the trop with the single green stripe, not sure.  I think we also had those a year or so after until they added the 3 stripes on the helmet (

It looks like just dark green to me.  Wish they did a black one with the black out uniforms.

Off colored "gold" would never get to fad status to begin with.
