Alvarado was a PUNTER... not a kicker. However xCJL never brought a good kicker to the program so Alvarado was forced to do double duty as kicker and punter. This was finally rectified when Bonani was brought in as a kicker, which allowed Alvarado to focus back to punting. Wrong. Alvarado was brought in as a kicker who then ended up being a better punter than a kicker.

It can literally win or lose three games. This. Gilbert's offenses have historically struggled with red zone efficiency and we're breaking in a new QB/Offense (no more flowers factor). Considering CCS is a defensive oriented coach the defense should be ok but will have some big growing pains early with the key losses so we can't afford to leave points on the board. If last year was any indication I’m a bit concerned. Our kicking game was strong but everything else special teams related was terrifying. I think his team had the most blocked kicks while he was there. It's a clear pattern. His special teams is atrocious everywhere he has coached. The only time his D1 red zone efficiency has been in the top 50 was at Tulsa. We went from 59th to 73rd last year which isn’t major, but we also had the offensive players to not take much of a dip at all. FWIW, Texas was 94th in the nation when he was there. Those stats don’t give a lot of comfort when we have no idea what special teams will look like, and when there was very little emphasis placed on them last season. If we can’t score in the red zone and we also have to worry about FG’s getting blocked or missed frequently, that’s legitimate reason to be concerned. This could all very well work out, but let’s hope someone on the staff is smart enough to see the numbers the past couple years.
