Laid off = Your employer did not choose to retain your services. Fired = Your employer did not choose to retain your services. Seems the same to me. It means since you were let go due to no fault of your own, you are eligible for those benefits, as well as a rehire. Aside from that... I mean not much of a difference. Laid Off - The job you used to do it being eliminated. Fired - We want someone else to do the job you used to do. It does make a difference, speaking as someone who has been laid off before. In theory, you can't control being laid off, where as fired could have been avoided. Being laid off allowed me to leave on good terms, and kept the door open for a return.
