I previously mentioned that J. Niemann will be defending his crown at the Sergio Garcia Junior Championship this weekend.

Below is a Spanish article translated into English via Google. it's not perfect, but readable:

03 May.2017
Joaco goes for the bicampeonato of the Sergio Garcia Junior Championship

Will look to revalidate the triumph obtained in Panther Lake last year

Joaquín Niemann is already in the United States for his next international challenge. It is the Sergio Garcia Foundation Junior Championship, to be played May 5-7 at the Championsgate Golf Club in Florida, where the Chilean will seek to retain the title obtained in 2016.

It should be noted that after the weekly update of the World Amateur Ranking (WAGR), Joaco remains in second place with 1278.9 points, approaching the first place, where the American Maverick McNealy appears with 1280.8, opening the possibility that the Chilean, with a Good result in Florida, can achieve the goal of becoming the World No. 1.

The Polo Club player arrives in an unbeatable moment of form, after winning the Taylormade-adidas Golf Junior and the Junior Invitational, a couple of weeks ago. In the 2016 edition of the tournament, Niemann prevailed after delivering cards of 71 and 68 hits, for a cumulative of 139.

The stage for this year will be the Championsgate Golf Club, a circuit designed by Greg Norman, a links-style court, where the best score recorded at the competition level in Men up to now has been 67. We all know that Joaco, Can overcome that without problems.

You can follow Joaco through the  OFFICIAL SITE

http://chilegolf.cl/sitio/noticias/view/590a2f36-9b00-4b26-b30d-5f37c83f612a

I noticed that this tourney from last year is not listed among his events by WAGR.

http://www.wagr.com/en/Ranking/Player.aspx?playerid=12017&ismens=True

I do not know if that was an oversight on their part or it is just not recognized by them. So, it is possible that he might again not credit by them for his finish.

Considering last year was the first time for this particular tournament, the organizers might not have known (or forgot) to send in the results to WAGR.

See WAGR note below :

If that is indeed the case, and those results would now be added retroactively, he would already be #1.

I took it upon myself to contact the organizer (AJGA) and they explained that the reason why last year's Sergio Garcia Junior Championship didn't show up on the WAGR site is because it is only a "36 hole"  event and, as such, is not counted by them. This year it will be the same format. So, the author of the above article is mistaken in his belief that it would be counted. It will NOT!!!

We will know tomorrow at noon where USF will be playing.

Last time USF got shipped out west in the regional, which was a disadvantage.

It would be great, if we could stay on the east coast.

USF Senior Writer

TAMPA, MAY 4, 2017 – USF's path back to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship begins in Louisiana.

Head coach Steve Bradley's ninth-seeded Bulls were one of 14 programs selected to compete in the Baton Rouge Regional that will take place Monday, May 15 through Wednesday, May 17. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the six 54-hole regional tournaments will advance to the championship rounds.

USF will be looking to book its third consecutive trip to the final rounds of the NCAA Championship and the Bulls will be making their fifth straight regional appearance. The Bulls won the New Haven Regional in 2015 and advanced all the way to the NCAA Championship match play quarterfinals that spring. USF placed fourth at the Albuquerque, N.M., Regional last spring and finished 26th in stroke play at the NCAA Championship.

Senior Rigel Fernandes (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Claudio Correa (Santiago, Chile) have been a part of USF's past two NCAA runs, while junior Cristian DiMarco(Longwood, Fla.) competed for the Bulls in the postseason last spring. All three Bulls helped the program capture its third consecutive American Athletic Conference crown in wire-to-wire fashion on April 25.

USF is one of three American Athletic Conference programs selected to compete in a regional. UCF is seeded eighth in the College Grove, Tenn., Regional, while Houston is headed to Stanford, Calif., as a nine seed.

Final rounds of the NCAA Championship will be played May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., with Northern Illinois University serving as the host institution.

Quotables

Head coach Steve Bradley's thoughts heading into the Baton Rouge Regional:

“I think it's a good region for us, not only from a convenience and closeness standpoint with the time zone change, but it's also on Bermuda grass. That's an advantage of playing in Florida and going up there and playing on a similar grass. It's a familiarity thing that will help us. If you look at the region, a couple teams are coming from the Midwest or even along the Eastern Seaboard and they're used to Bentgrass, so it will be a little bit of a transition for them. I'm excited any chance you get to compete for a national championship. That's the goal, but we have to get there first and we'll be looking to handle our business.”

Bradley on the team having NCAA experience and first-year Bulls being ready for postseason play:

“Cristian played in an NCAA Regional last year, so did Rigel and Claudio. Jimmy (Jones) played in the Division II national championship last year and Pri (Singh) has done the same thing at his former school. They've all been on the big stage… We're going to get there a couple days early to kind of get familiar with everything, then we step on grounds and we're just playing golf. The goal is really to advance, but you go out there with the mindset of trying to win and the rest will take care of itself.”

Bradley on the strength of The American in men's golf:

“It's always exciting and it is special to get a chance to represent your conference three years in a row. Houston made it as well, UCF made it and an incoming team in Wichita State has made it, too. Our golf conference is pretty good and to be the conference champion is certainly a special recognition.”

Senior Rigel Fernandes on the Bulls playing their best golf at the right time:

“I think everybody has just gotten comfortable throughout the year. We had a couple guys come in that hadn't played at this level. I think it was just a matter of everybody getting their games together and being comfortable. It's the most confident we've been all year. We won Old Waverly, that was a huge week, and obviously winning conference three in a row is pretty special.”

Notables
