All depends on what exactly the search firm's responsibilities were. If part of those responsibilities was to do a thorough background check, vetting the resume completely on each candidate, it would fall to them. Also it's not the AD's job to check the validity of someone's degree from their resume. That's all on Masiello. Unless I'm misremembering, that process went fairly SOP. An offer was made and upon accepting,a background check then occurs before the position is finalized. And I bet that fact cost him a lot of other opportunities, too.
