  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Kittinger [kanye]Baumgartner, Im'ma let you finish, but Joseph Kittinger had the most badass freefall of all time. of all time[/kanye] props to the redbull guy, but this dude was the shiz, doing in in 1960 with a duct taped suit and an open helmet. why is it relevant? this guy was born in tampa...and he did help with this 2nd fall. original dude did like 619mph, pretty solid.
  2. out of those arkansas, auburn , wake forest, cal, and tenn come before us. can't see 10 on there. depends on the perception. Colorado is a pretty big school, not easy to win, but not a bad job. Kentucky, you know what you're getting, but look at what James Franklin is doing with Vandy. Kentucky will still pay up well. Syracuse - it's possible to win there. still a brand better than usf Boston College - similar to Syracuse. I'd almost say USF would be a better job than Wake, and maybe BC, and a toss up with SU or UK, but it probably comes down to other factors.
  3. Two points. 1. I like Heath. I personally don't get into basketball as much as football (I still like to go to the games and watch), so I was never calling for Heath's head, but I'm also not quick to say he's earned his keep. He got a bubble team in on a very down year in the Big East. I do hope he keeps it up, and he got an extension right? (At least his was warranted) He will be here for another year or two minimum, but everyone better hope they don't have two terrible seasons. Anything is possible. 2. The Petrino stuff, I admit, I wouldn't mind that guy bringing his expertise to our program. But I made a list of possible coaching vacancies at the end of this year (there may be more or less), and even IF Holtz got let go, there are 18-20 other programs that will have openings (judging by coaches who aren't in their first 1-2 years), and of that list, there's about ten of them who would be "above" USF in terms of where a coach would likely go before coming here: Tennessee - Dooley may be out unless they finish really strong Kentucky - Phillips is all but gone Arkansas - We know this Auburn - Chizik is in the same seat as Dooley, maybe even more so Cal - Tedford usually saves his ass, but possible Colorado - Embree is in year 2 or 3, but they're just SO bad Syracuse - Maronne probably survives, but never know Boston College - Spaziani may be on the way out - new AD gets to pick his guy Wake Forest - it's not an easy job, but Grobe hasn't been great USF - who knows at this point Army - Dunno the specifics, but Ellerson isn't getting it done (another hard job) UNLV - Hauck hasn't done much there Idaho - Akey hasn't done anything either, they may be FCS again with the WAC dissolving New Mexico State - Walker had a few sparks, but still nothing (see idaho) Eastern Michigan - Ron English has produced some winless seasons... Buffalo - Quinn (from Cincinnati) has yet to really follow in Turner Gil's footsteps And there will be a few more depending on who tanks the season. So yeah.
  4. Tampa wins slightly in the TV market dept (like 14th vs 19th). USF has the more direct bowl access since we play in that very stadium, but the Outback Bowl is pretty much tied to the Big Ten and SEC, so unless RJS got a 2nd bowl game like the Citrus Bowl does, that won't be a huge factor. It would probably come down to the strength of the overall athletic program. Which is why it's still important that basketball is good, and baseball/softball and soccer.
  5. whatchu talkin bout guys? we had a red-out, **** looks great!
  6. Syracuse and Louisville have spent extensive time on there in years past, as has Kentucky and Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest, Wazzu, Colorado, Kansas, Ole Miss, Indiana, Minnesota...and others. Always a fun read though.
  7. It's a fairly weak schedule, but that is both good and bad. Any bad losses in there, and it will hurt come bubble time. On the good side, if we can go 2-0 against UCF or at least 1-1, take care of OSU, and have a good shot at beating UGA, we should be 2 losses or less come conference slate.
  8. I agree with Matt's post for the most part. Except there are ways around the non-starting talent level excuse. Boise State does it, Cincinnati does it, Rutgers is doing it. In some cases, one player can make a huge difference, like Houston (Kevin Kolb or Case Keenum) or UCF (Kevin Smith). But in other cases where a team isn't a huge brand name and doesn't bring in top 25 recruiting classes, it falls on the coaching. Now I understand the competition being played against Boise, UCF, Houston, etc is much different, but they're also recruiting people to play to that competition. If Cincinnati (and even UConn a few years back) can recruit and play with non-spectacular talent, USF sure as hell can...with the right coaching.
  9. Have any more insight like why they are quitting on the staff? Well, Ghost is Mike Lanaris and just got sick of all the negativity on message boards. wat can i have your autograph?
  10. Butch can't coach for ****, but we'd probably have a team as talented as Florida and Florida State after about 4 years. Petrino can flat out coach. Good at football. Bad at life. Petrino is still likely bound for another HC gig, as could be Davis, but one could only imagine Holtz canning his staff and getting Petrino as an OC and Davis as a DC...even if only for about 2 years, they'd both bolt for big jobs after "repairing" their reps at USF...and in the meantime, USF would rake in some nasty recruits and should be able to field a quality team.
  11. 3rd down number would be way lower if not for the fact we give up 1st down conversions on 1st and 2nd down, so there aren't a lot of 3rd downs to defend LOL
  12. coachspeak. he's been saying that for 3 weeks now. if you actually take responsibility, something should be changed or coached or fixed. the team has not improved at all, and if it has, another area has gone unchecked and cost us. obviously, coaches do not speak very specific, but i haven't heard anything resembling any sort of detail like "we're going to work on play calls that work," or "we're going to do pass rushing drills," or "we're going to move some players around and try a few new things." instead all we hear is "We're going to go out there and roll up our sleeves."
  13. Everytime someone mentions Gruden or Dungy or Cowher or something along these lines, I want to punch a baby.
  14. I agree. I watched the Oregon game later that night and holy **** lol what speed. We should get Artisil(sp?) some reps and try and get a speed game going. May as well try anything at this point. Lamar played well though, cant complain. Would have gotten the game ball if we had won. Murray just seems uninspired. I havent seen him make one big play this season(iirc). I'm okay with Murray. He's not a game breaking back who is gonna squirt through a hole and run 70 yards for a score. He is our Mo Plancher, Mike Ford, Darrell Scott this season. He is the guy who is going to run it up the middle, make a few moves, but mostly churn out 3-6 ypc, chew clock and keep drives alive when he can. His downfall has been O-line issues and play calling.
  15. Looks like Gold/White/Gold this week. I think the gold pants this year have a green stripe on them so they don't look too GT/UCF'ish.
  16. It would be empty about 359 days every year! Could hold outdoor graduation ceremonies (I know, weather doesn't like it - but maybe the one in December). Could hold student pep rallies during homecoming week (a la Texas A&M where they get students out and teach them chants and hand signals and traditions; make it requirement for freshman if they want their tickets) Could hold concerts outdoors (weather permitting - yes, the SunDome is better, but could hold "dirtier" rocker style concerts out there) Could hold larger soccer games there if Corbett gets too small (hey we have had some packed games) Could hold high school football playoffs for the region (would be cheaper than Ray Jay and they never fill it anyways) Exhibition games
  17. i don't think anyone is really thinking bama will be an ivy league status academically, probably was more of a saying really. but throw out all those private schools - rice, tulane, vandy, northwestern, duke...smaller enrollments as it is, even miami is a smaller school like that (where football was an afterthought until schnelly came along). apples to oranges. i think with some schools, they just have the establishment factor going to where they have the alumni base and offered the types of programs that developed higher paying careers (and required higher grades to get into in the first place). thus, more deep-pocketed alumni, even if not very numerous. therefore, they don't necessarily have ridiculous athletics programs, but may have a few that stand out (rice has great baseball, vandy too and hoops, duke hoops/lax) because they spend their money on the academics and attract a certain type of student in the first place. schools like alabama, oklahoma, florida, lsu....they can all have good academics...for public state schools, and some have risen above others, but their football is driving that money. basically - there's no wrong answer, just more than one way to raise your academic standards.
  18. When I think about Holtz and his past, I can't help but go back to thinking about this game...which was basically Skip's last game before coming to USF. http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=300020151 Although I think the blame could be on the kicker missing 3 field goals, I remember watching the later portions of this game and seeing ECU squander chance after chance to put it away...and looking back, I realize ECU was playing similar style that we're playing now. Not to lose.
  19. billboards are for championships, conference and/or national. period. that type of stuff isn't used for any single win, unless that win is getting you a trophy. exceptions might be for a congratulatory billboard recognizing a final 4 appearance or title game appearance and kudos to a good season. anything else better be used to market market market.
  20. Athletic success DOES have SOME correlation to student "demand" as it were. It's no coincidence Florida's average GPA levels went up significantly after their big years of 2006-2008. Everyone and their mom wanted in, and more applications means UF was able to be more choosy in its standards, and thus instant "better GPA/test scores/whatever". I think the issue with USF is laid out in point number four. "...A school so obsessed with its image," is USF in a nutshell. The commercials with Genshaft scream it. The delusional spoiled fanbase screams it. There's so much about USF that just screams "trying too hard," rather than letting things develop. I understand college is a business, and athletics are tongue-in-cheek...a business, but there is absolutely no way to force the things USF envisions. I think they have the right mindset about wanting to be there someday, but I feel like they're in everyone's faces about LOOK AT US! WE'RE A TOP RESEARCH PLACE! COME HERE AND LEARN! WE HAVE A PIRATE SHIP STADIUM AND THE BEACH IS CLOSE BY! USF really can't keep doing that. USF has made great strides both on the academic side and the athletics side, especially in facilities. They may have to endure a few mistakes in coach hires over the next few years (I'm looking at you baseball and football), but those can be corrected. I myself feel like we should be farther along than we are, but then I sit back and realize how young we are compared to 99% of the other colleges out there we strive to be, especially in athletics. I'm all for correcting the Holtz era if he doesn't deliver in the next year or two (once he for sure has only "his" guys), but rushing it will just lead to another short-term vision that ends up tanking in the long run. I want to defend USF at every chance when UF/FSU/other people degrade it as a commuter school or a safety school or somewhere that just sucks and is garbage. Because it's not any of those (anymore on some counts). I just realized that I have to defend it but not oversell my defense.
  21. He's pretty much exactly at the same place he was at ECU after 2 years. Kicking him out at this point would mean no back to back conference championships. What does that mean? People in charge know more about football than fans do. He's a decent CUSA coach, but not a BCS-level coach. Can't compare what he did at ECU to what he's doing here. Bad as it is, the Big East is light-years ahead of CUSA. Actually, no it's not. Not when you take out WVU and replace them w/Temple ... and I think he actually had more, better quality, BCS wins there than he's had here. I'm not sure what the problem here is but it's not because Skip, himself, is in over his head. must be that OCS they have #sorryIHadTo
  22. sucks it happened to your car. most people even in the stadium lots will take down window flags and magnets, usually wandering hoodlums will swipe those things. also, just because it was keyed with usf on it, doesn't mean it was an actual usf fan or student. could have been a drunk fsu fan wanting to frame someone (far fetched but possible)...could have been a random person off the street, easy way to incite hate between fsu-usf. no way to prove it. if it was a usf fan or student, or whomever it was, many of us would love to kick their ass for doing so. however, keep the disparaging comments to yourself. we as usf fans can ***** and moan about our own program all we want since we're part of it and have grounds to criticize and congratulate. your program is 1-1 against us, and just evened it out not 48 hours ago.
