If he wanted to wait to the last day, he should have said May 20th. Perhaps, he's just mixed up about that. Of course, you may be correct that he is only joking around. If he is, then he's already gotten some pundits to report it as a fact on twitter. LOL

He committed to Minn. Sadly, the Joke is on us.

USF basketball target Ahmad Gilbert committed to Minnesota today. Imagine that they'll look to a transfer or JUCO for last open scholarship.

Let's not rule out that we didn't offer, as we're limited on scholarships and may expect a better player for COA's team.

So, what he's not saying is - "Everyone else lied to me." Huh?

Gilbert commits to Minnesota

Evan Daniels
Director of Recruiting

Ahmad "JR" Gilbert, a 6-6 wing prospect, verbally committed to Minnesota.
Richard Pitino added another 2015 prospect to his recruiting class.

Ahmad “J.R†Gilbert, a standout at Philadelphia (Pa.) Constitution, told Scout that he verbally committed to Minnesota during a visit on Thursday.

“It’s a big time school,†Gilbert told Scout. “They were looking for a wing. I knew a couple of guys that were there and one of the guys that’s committed – Kevin Dorsey. I knew Nate from summer camps.â€

Gilbert originally signed with George Mason, but opened up his recruitment when Paul Hewitt was fired. Since reopening the process, Gilbert also reeled in interest from Pittsburgh, Boston College, South Florida and Penn State.

Gilbert said Pitino was upfront with him and that stuck out to him.

“When he came to my house, he was just real,†Gilbert said. “He said you’re going to have to work, but I want you. I asked him about playing the right way and he said only way you can play right away is if you work hard. He was really honest about it. When I asked him what I needed to work on he gave me a rundown on how college coaches are going to look at me what I can’t do. That helps too.â€

“They were honest about everything,†Gilbert added. “They didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear, they told me what I need to work on.â€

Minnesota assistant coach Kimani Young was the point man on the recruitment.

“He’s honest,†Gilbert said. “The whole recruitment and the whole time I was here, he was with me every step of the way. And I had a great time with Nate too. He’s a real cool dude.â€

Minnesota now has five players in their 2015 recruiting class. Gilbert joins four-star guards Kevin Dorsey and Dupree McBrayer, as well as three-star players Jarvis Johnson and Jonathan Nwankwo.

I don't know if he's implying that, but it certainly can be inferred that way.

Can't get them all. We need some frontcourt help, so I'm not too hurt about missing out on a wing player like Gilbert.

Hopefully our guys aren't coming off as used car salesmen but I think with the people he knew already there, and committed, he wanted to go there and that colored his opinion on the recruiting process ...

Maybe he just didn't consider USF  "a big time school" like he does Minn, which is also in a major conference. It's not like we are UConn, Memphis or Cncy with a rich history in basketball.
