There is a world wide market for soccer players. And most teams now have their own youth academy to develop their own players outside of the college system. They can also draft players from the lower leagues (USL, PDL, NASL) that were previously unaffliated to an MLS club. The development of players is more like baseball in that even most players coming out of college are projects that make or may not work out and will spend a couple of years toiling as cheaply paid reserves trying to prove they are more valuable than that.
