So if our conference champ doesnt qualify for the playoff, were looking at the BBVA compass bowl???

Our champ only needs to be better than mwc or CUSA champ to go to chick fil a, cotton or fiesta every year.

Which bowl does the MAC winner have an auto bid to?

The same as us. If there weren't an auto bid for us this year, then our champ wouldn't be in a BCS game or whatever they're going to be called in the future. Northern Illinois would get the bid.

UCF would likely get picked ahead of NIU by selection committee.  NIU has played no one.  Strength of schedule is terrible.  This is supposed to be a factor.  UCF has defeated Penn St, a top 10 Louisville, and lost to a top 10 South Carolina by 3.  NIU has no top 25 wins or even close to top 25 wins.  NIU also didn't play 2 top 10 teams.  That's what the selection committee is for.

Not entirely sure that's accurate but can't find the official wording that clarifies how the G5 participant will be chosen. This article by Dodd addresses it but it's still not real clear where the highest ranking/rating will come from. It may actually be from the committee but it also may come from another poll.  http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/dennis-dodd/20954200/bcs-presidents-approve-access-for-non-bcs-schools-in-playoff  Maybe someone has a site with a more definitive description ...

Team-Selection Procedures

The bowls will select their participants from two pools: (1) automatic qualifiers, all of which must be selected, and (2) at-large teams, if fewer than 10 teams qualify automatically. The following sequence will be used when establishing pairings:

1. The top two teams in the final BCS Standings will be placed in the National Championship Game (hereinafter "NCG").

2. Unless they qualify to play in the NCG, the champions of selected conferences are contractually committed to host selected games:

• Atlantic Coast Conference - Orange Bowl

• Big Ten Conference - Rose Bowl

• Big 12 Conference - Fiesta Bowl

• Pac-12 Conference - Rose Bowl

• Southeastern Conference - Sugar Bowl

3. If a bowl loses a host team to the NCG, then such bowl shall select a replacement team from among the automatic-qualifying teams and the at-large teams before any other selections are made. If two bowls lose host teams to the NCG, each bowl will get a replacement pick before any other selections are made. In such case, the bowl losing the No. 1 team gets the first replacement pick, and the bowl losing the No. 2 team gets the second replacement pick. If the Rose Bowl loses both the Big Ten and Pac-12 champions to the NCG, it will receive two replacement picks.

A bowl choosing a replacement team may not select:

A. A team in the NCG, or

B. The host team for another BCS Bowl;

Further, when two bowls lose host teams, the bowl losing the No. 1 team may not select a replacement team from the same conference as the No. 2 team, unless the bowl losing the No. 2 team consents.

4. After steps No. 1, 2, and 3 have been completed, any bowl with an unfilled slot shall select a team from the automatic qualifiers and/or at-large teams in the following order:

• January 2011 games - Sugar, Orange, Fiesta

• January 2012 games - Fiesta, Sugar, Orange

• January 2013 games - Fiesta, Sugar, Orange

• January 2014 games - Orange, Sugar, Fiesta

All teams earning automatic berths must be selected.

5. After completion of the selection process as described in Paragraph Nos. 1-4, the conferences and Notre Dame may, but are not required to, adjust the pairings, taking into consideration the following:

A. Whether the same team will be playing in the same bowl game for two consecutive years; and/or

B. Whether two teams that played against one another in the regular season will be paired against one another in a bowl game; and/or

C. Whether the same two teams will play against each other in a bowl game for two consecutive years; and/or

D. Whether alternative pairings may have greater or lesser appeal to college football fans as measured by expected ticket sales for the bowls and by expected television interest, and the consequent financial impact on ESPN and the bowls.

The pairings may not be altered by removing the Big 10 champion or Pac-12 champion from the Rose Bowl.

That's the BCS process and is going into the dumpster after January 2014 ...

Brian Murphy â€@murphsturph 16m

I have independent confirmation that Petersen has taken Washington job.

This helps our conference in the long term for possible BCS at large bids

Just in case people aren't figuring this out on their own...which some aren't. Here is what will most likely happen with our champion as we are still the 6th best conference for FB.

If the American champion finishes as the highest-ranked team among the champions of Conference USA, the Mountain West Conference, the Mid-American Conference and the Sun Belt Conference, but does not qualify for the College Football Playoff, then it would participate in one of the three Host Bowls that will comprise part of the CFP rotation – the Cotton Bowl, the Chick-fil-A Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl.

Our bowl eligible non-champion teams will be in the AAC affiliated bowls.

I'm assuming the AP and the Coaches polls will remain. Just the BCS is going, nothing else.

If those are the two choices, the lesser of the two evils is the AP ....

I believe that after a few years, this playoff will expand to six, maybe eight

That could well be. I think the four-team playoff does two things. One, it shuts up the "I wanna playoff, I wanna playoff" contingent. Now, if you're #5 and not happy that you didn't get an invite, OWSH, that's the way things work. Look forward to hearing from you next year.

Secondly, it serves as a prototype for an expanded field down the road. If there's a market for it, it can be developed.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
