Whoever heard of the University of West Florida, didn't even know it existed.  Isn't New College, a branch or part of USF?  At least it use to be when I went to USF in the 90s.

New College was originally an independent college.  They were at the brink of bankruptcy in the 70's.  They agreed to join USF as its honors branch in exchange for the state resolving its debt. But it was always a separate unit in the USF System.

 

They became independent again in 2001 when the FSUS was re-organized.

Here is a weird tie between West Florida and USF. Chucky Atkins was projected to be a NBA draft pick. He wasn't selected and had to go play overseas for a few years before getting a shot with the Magic. The PG who surprisingly got drafted instead of Chucky Atkins, was Moochie Norris from West Florida. (that is all I can tell you about UWF and their athletics)
