OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys signed defensive end George Selvie last week because of depth problems across the defensive line due to injuries.

Selvie made a quick impact on his first day.
 

   

He passed the conditioning test and was inserted with the third-team line last week and provided some quarterback pressures.

Fast-forward to this week: On Thursday, Selvie got a look with the first team and picked up two sacks during practice.

Selvie isn't guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster, but his impressive showing in the early going is making people notice.

"That's rare," said Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones. "It is a plus. It's hard to find guys who can come in off the street and do the job."

In 2010, the St. Louis Rams drafted Selvie in the seventh round from South Florida. He played just one season with the Rams and spent the next two seasons in Jacksonville. After he was released, Selvie was signed by Tampa Bay before getting cut in April.

Selvie had contract offers from two other teams but elected to wait for the best fit. He wanted to play in a 4-3 scheme at defensive end but had seen time as a defensive tackle. When the Cowboys called, given their need for defensive ends because of the injuries to Anthony Spencer and Tyrone Crawford, Selvie told his agent to make the deal, quickly.

"I haven't been with a team in OTAs or a team since April, so it's hard to get adjusted to things, but you do the best you can to get out here and play football," Selvie said. "It's just rotation, and they're giving everybody a look, so they're giving me a look and I'm grateful for the opportunity."
