Thx, weird that he's waiting until June to Decide. Guess he wants to watch Hackenburg in ST.

IMG football players play in all-star game at The Trop

ST. PETERSBURG

He destroyed a microwave because he forgot to add water to an instant macaroni and cheese mix and he woke up late for classes a few times, but IMG quarterback Michael O’Connor managed to make the final year of his high school career a success.

IMGs Michael O'Connor warms up for the Under Armour All-Star Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. Thursday, Jan. 2.

Like teammate Bo Scarbrough, he made a big decision this past summer to leave his family and take a chance in a new program, in a new place with new faces.

Yes, from the outside it looked like a no-brainer: Train under Heisman winner Chris Weinke at IMG, the renown sports academy in Bradenton.

It ended up being the right choice despite the small growing pains.

Their experience culminated Thursday evening with an appearance in the Under Armour All-American Game at Tropicana Field, where Deion Sanders and Herm Edwards roamed the sidelines hollering at players, and the top recruits in the nation played in front of an ESPN-televised crowd.

“I grew up a lot this year,†O’Connor said. “I felt like we trained like we were already at the college level — lift sessions at 6 a.m., classes after and practice after school — and by the end of the day we were exhausted.

“Being at IMG really gets you prepared for the college life.

“But it was hard being away from my family. You don’t have mom doing things for you, you have to set your own alarm, get your priorities straight.â€

He slept through some alarms, had to run because of it, but got it all worked out so he could play on Friday nights.

IMG got some big performances from him en route to an 8-2 record and he got an appearance in the Under Armour game, a huge opportunity considering he’s still undecided on where he will play college football.

O’Connor had verbally committed to Penn State and was set to enroll early before the university’s head coach Bill O’Brien bolted for the NFL.

“I don’t want to rush the decision,†O’Connor said. “I need to do what's best for me and see who Penn State hires.â€
