The recruiting ranking sites don't think much of this class so far.

Maybe they have a few tricks up there sleeves.

As I pointed out in another thread, the recruiting sites are often wrong and over look talent. Some examples, George Selvie, NR, Justin Blackmon was a 3 star WR, Chris Johnson 1 star, Colin Kaepernick 2 star. The number of high school recruits rated 3 stars and under by these websites that go one to be star college athletes is huge. They also go the other way too, over rating players. That's why its up to the coaching staff to get to rate these players.

I am happy with 3 stars, they can produce and have room to develop. Though Leavitt did a pretty good job at that.

A 3 star Rival could be a 2 star Scout and in actuality be a Heisman contender. Its not the stars, its the quality of the scouting evaluation.

As well as how well they fit the system they're being recruited for. If 2-star Colin Kaepernick (cited above) goes somewhere that doesn't play the pistol offense with a zone read feel to it, he probably doesn't have the pretty good college career he had or get drafted where he did either.

Maybe, but watching him play for the 49ers, he seems to be able to do it all. But of course, some players fit in different systems better than others. Kaepernick wasn't recruited based on his high school football playing, ironically. So it takes a staff that sometimes has to look beyond the box to spot the extraordinary.

2 stars typically mean the prospect isn't rated

Depends. If they are NR, not ranked, yeah. But you can't rank a prospect without rating them.
